Shaggy (musician)
Orville Richard Burrell CD (born October 22, 1968), better known by his stage name Shaggy, is a Jamaican-American reggae rapper, singer, and songwriter who scored hits with the songs "It Wasn't Me", " Boombastic", "In The Summertime", "Oh Carolina", and "Angel". He has been nominated for seven Grammy Awards, winning twice for Best Reggae Album with ''Boombastic'' in 1996 and ''44/876'' with Sting in 2019, and has won the Brit Award for International Male Solo Artist in 2002. In 2007, he was awarded the Jamaican Order of Distinction with the rank of Commander. In 2022, he was awarded an honorary Doctor of Fine Arts degree from Brown University. Reggae Fusion
Reggae fusion is a genre of reggae that mixes reggae and/or dancehall with other genres, such as pop, rock, hip hop, R&B, jazz, funk, soul, disco, electronic and latin. Origin Although artists have been mixing reggae with other genres from as early as the early 1970s, no official term had been used to describe this practice. Artists such as UB40 were described using terms that joined the various genres they performed (e.g. "reggae funk", "reggae pop", "reggae-disco"). It was not until the late 1990s when the term was coined. Dancehall is a genre of Jamaican popular music that originated in the late 1970s. Reggae () is a music genre that originated in Jamaica in the late 1960s. The term also denotes the modern popular music of Jamaica and its diaspora. The album includes material from Shaggy's first five studio albums, as well as the new recording, "Get Up, Stand Up". Background Origins for the album date back to March 1999, as some sites report that an album, titled the ''Ultimate Shaggy Collection'', was released on March 23, 1999. The album included material from Shaggy's first four studio albums, as well as the original version of "Luv Me, Luv Me", which featured Janet Jackson, and three new songs—"The Reggae Virus", featuring Mad Lion and KRS One, "True Dat" and "Hot Gal". ''Boombastic'' is the third studio album released by Jamaican artist Shaggy. The album was released on July 11, 1995. The album spawned five singles: "In the Summertime", a remake of the Mungo Jerry hit, " Boombastic", which peaked at number 1 on the UK Singles Chart, at 3 on the ''Billboard'' Hot 100 and at number 1 on the U.S. R&B chart, "Why You Treat Me So Bad", the double A-side "Something Different" / "The Train Is Coming", and "Day Oh", which was released as a Japanese only single. "Boombastic" was used as the theme for a 1995 Levi's ad, which was directed by Michael Mort and Deiniol Morris. ''Midnite Lover'' is the fourth studio album released by Jamaican singer Shaggy. The self-produced album became the follow-up to Shaggy's career-making album '' Boombastic''; however, it did not fare as well.
