Boolcoomatta Reserve
Boolcoomatta Reserve is a 630 km2 private protected area in eastern South Australia, 463 km north-east of Adelaide and 100 km west of Broken Hill. It is owned and managed by Bush Heritage Australia (BHA). History The land was used as a sheep station for 150 years, running a flock as large as 90,000 sheep. There are also relics of some small-scale copper mining on the property. The land was purchased by BHA in 2006 with assistance from the Australian Government and Nature Foundation SA. Landscape and vegetation Much of Boolcoomatta is flat, with undulating ranges and rocky outcrops in the western section of the property. The ranges support open Acacia woodland while the plains to the east support shrublands of chenopods, including saltbush, as well as tussock grassland. Olary, South Australia
__NOTOC__ Olary is a town and locality on the Barrier Highway in South Australia. It is situated near Olary Creek and is one of the easternmost settlements in South Australia. The name "Olary" was first given to a nearby well or waterhole by pastoralists Duffield, Harrold and Hurd. Description and history This small settlement was established in the late 1880s to service the highway and the railway which pass through here. ''O'Lary'' Post Office opened on 12 October 1886, was renamed ''Oolarie'' around 1888 and ''Olary'' around 1896. The slender-billed thornbill (''Acanthiza iredalei'') is a small bird native to Australia. There are several kinds of protected areas, which vary by level of protection depending on the enabling laws of each country or the regulations of the international organizations involved. The plains-wanderer (''Pedionomus torquatus'') is a bird, the only representative of family Pedionomidae and genus ''Pedionomus''. It is endemic to Australia. The majority of the remaining population is found in the Riverina region of New South Wales. Description The plains-wanderer is a quail-like ground bird, measuring 15–19 cm. It is such an atypical bird that it is placed in an entire family of its own, Pedionomidae. The adult male is light brown above, with fawn-white underparts with black crescents. The adult female is substantially larger than the male, and has a distinctive white-spotted black collar. They have excellent camouflage, and will first hide at any disturbance. Boolcoomatta, Bindarrah And Kalkaroo Stations Important Bird Area
The Boolcoomatta, Bindarrah and Kalkaroo Stations Important Bird Area is a 1402 km2 tract of land in north-eastern South Australia. It comprises three pastoral properties, 53,000 ha Kalkaroo Station, 24,000 ha Bindarrah Station, and 63,000 ha Boolcoomatta. The whole site has been identified by BirdLife International as an Important Bird Area (IBA) because it supports a significant population of endangered plains-wanderers – perhaps the largest population of the species outside the Riverina region of New South Wales. Description The IBA lies on sandy and clay loam soils that support open tussock grasslands and chenopod shrublands, with stands of river redgums on drainage courses.
