The Society of the Friends of Peasants ( da, Bondevennernes Selskab) was a liberal Danish political society founded on 5 May 1846 by members of the provincial consultative assemblies Johan Christian Drewsen and Balthazar Christensen, with the intent to promote the liberation of the peasantry and equality among the different classes of society.Skou, Kaare R. Balthazar Christensen
Balthazar Matthias Christensen (25 October 1802 – 21 April 1882) was a Denmark, Danish jurist and politician representing the Society of the Friends of Peasants (). Christensen was born in Randers, Denmark, in 1802 to master drafter and Major General Christian Peter Christensen (1765–1836) and Kirstine Bang (1772–1855). From 1829 to 1831 he was a government assistant on the Guinea, Guinean coast, but in 1839 he returned to Denmark, where he founded a law firm in Copenhagen. The same year, he became editor of the newspaper ''Fædrelandet (1834–82), Fædrelandet'', but in 1841 he was censured and had to resign. From 1840 to 1843 he was a member of the Copenhagen City Council, the Frederiksberg Parish Council and the Copenhagen County Council. In 1846 he was a co-founder of the Society of the Friends of Peasants () and was its president from 1848 to 1958. Johan Christian Drewsen
Johan Christian Drewsen (23 December 1777 – 25 August 1851) was a Danish paper manufacturer, agronomist and politician. He owned Strandmøllen north of Copenhagen. Early life and education Srewsen was born at Strandmøllen, the son of paper manufacturer Christian Drewsen (1745–1810). His paternal family had come to Denmark from Hanover where they had been involved in manufacturing paper since 1692. Prominent cultural figures such as Knud Lyne Rahbek and Adam Oehlenschläger were frequent visitors to the home. The writer and translator Hans Guldberg Sveistrup was a house teacher. His friend, Conrad Malte-Brun, sought refuge at Strandmøllen when he had the flee the country in 1793. Drewsen was apprenticed to his father but was struck by the new ideas of the time and the revolution and planned to become an army officer and go into French military service.
