Cinque Hommes Creek
Cinque Hommes Creek is a tributary of the Mississippi River flowing through Perry County, Missouri. Name The early Colonial French name for the creek was "à la viande" or "with meat". Cinque Hommes Creek was named after Cape Cinque Hommes on the Mississippi River, although this name most likely originates from the Canadian Catholic missionary priest Father Jean Francois Buisson de St. Cosme. The pronunciation of "St. Cosme" and "Cinque Hommes" is exactly the same in French, and the early Frenchmen who came after father St. Cosme, misunderstanding, called it by the latter name. Perry County is a county located in the southeastern portion of the U.S. state of Missouri. As of the 2020 census, the population was 18,956. Its county seat is Perryville. The county was officially organized on November 16, 1820 (effective January 1, 1821) from Ste. Genevieve County and was named after Oliver Hazard Perry, a naval hero of the War of 1812. Bois Brule Bottom
The Bois Brule Bottom (French: Bois Brûlé) is an alluvial floodplain in Bois Brule Township in Perry County, Missouri stretching between Bois Brule Creek to the west and the Mississippi River to the east. The American Bottom stretches from St. Louis south along the east side of the Mississippi River all the way to the mouth of the Kaskaskia River, just north of Fort Kaskaskia, Illinois. At Morrow Island the American Bottom is broken by the Mississippi River, and on the west side of the Mississippi River the alluvial plain continues as the " Le Grande Champ" or Big Field Bottom, which includes Kaskaskia Island. South of Kaskaskia Island the alluvial flood plain continues on as the Bois Brule Bottom. Menfro, Missouri
Menfro is an unincorporated community in northeastern Perry County, Missouri, United States. It is located northeast of Perryville. Name The town is said to have been named by St. Louis-San Francisco Railroad officials in 1904 "for the three men who were killed on the river, who were bringing in supplies for the railroad." History Menfro was established on a small portion of Levi Wiggin's land grant #1328. In January 1877, this small plot of land was subdivided by the Perry County Surveyor and eventually became known as the Town of Menfro. In September 1879, Valentine and Margaret Hoehn sold a portion of land grant #1328 to Frederick Moldenhauer. Bois Brûlé is one of the eight townships located in Perry County, Missouri, in the United States of America. Etymology Bois Brûlé comes from the French word Bois-Brûlés (Burnt Woods) which was named for the Mississippi River bottom land by the same name. The name for the area was given by French colonial habitants, and was frequently applied by the French to a burnt tract of forest. History The early Native American inhabitants of the area were the Mississippian Mound Builders. The Mississippian Mound Builders were part of the Mississippian culture which went into decline in the 12th and 13th centuries. McBride, Missouri
McBride is an unincorporated community located in Bois Brule Township in Perry County, Missouri, United States. McBride is located approximately eight miles northeast of Perryville. Etymology McBride was named after the McBride family, who were prominent landowners in the area.State Historical Society of Missouri http://shs.umsystem.edu/manuscripts/ramsay/ramsay_perry.html History The first settlers in the area around McBride were the McBride family, headed by Stephan McBride, who came to Perry County in 1837.
