Boden Garrison
Boden Garrison ( sv, Bodens garnison) is a major garrison in Sweden, located in and around Boden, Sweden, Boden in Norrbotten County. The garrison has during the 20th century been, and still is, the largest garrison in Sweden, consisting of several units of the Swedish Armed Forces as well as Boden Fortress. History Before the decision to construct Boden Fortress, there was no permanently stationed military unit in Boden. The main military presence were the four Swedish allotment system, tenement soldiers of Bodens kompani (Boden Company)—part of Norrbotten Regiment (I 19)—that lived in the locality. To provide men for the fortress, several units were either created in, or moved to the newly built garrison. Boden, Sweden
Boden (, outdatedly ) is a locality and the seat of Boden Municipality in Norrbotten County, Sweden with 16,847 inhabitants in 2018. It is part of the larger area around coastal city Luleå some southeast. After Kiruna, it is the second largest town in Northern Sweden's interior. History The town of Boden started as a railway junction where the Northern Line (''Norra stambanan'', opened 1894) met with the Ore Line (''Malmbanan'') from the rich iron ore fields in northern Sweden. The town experienced increased growth when the Boden Fortress was constructed in the beginning of the 20th century. The purpose of the fortress was to defend Sweden from a possible attack from the east, where Russia was considered the most dangerous threat. The first official writings about Boden, was in a 1500~ tax paper, where the mention of "Boden village" with 7 homes. Boden got the title of city in 1919. Norrbotten Artillery Corps
Norrbotten Artillery Corps ( sv, Norrbottens artillerikår), designation A 5, was a Swedish Army artillery unit which operated between 1928 and 1951. The unit was based in Boden Garrison in Boden, Sweden. History On 1 April 1910, the Norrbotten Artillery Regiment's Detachment in Boden (A 4 B) was raised, and on 6 June 1910, the detachment was placed to Boden. The detachment consisted of III (Artillery) Division of Norrland Artillery Regiment (A 4). Through the Defence Act of 1925, it was decided to separate the division from Norrland Artillery Regiment (A 4), to form an independent unit. On 31 December 1927, the detachment was disbanded, and on 1 January 1928, the Norrbotten Artillery Corps (A 5) was raised as a horse field artillery corps. After World War II, the idea was that the Swedish defense would be disarmed. Norrbotten Brigade
The Norrbotten Brigade ( sv, Norrbottensbrigaden), also NMekB 19, is a Swedish Army mechanized brigade located in the province of Norrbotten, active since 2022. It was previously active from 1949 to 2000. The brigade is located at Boden Garrison, Norrbotten Regiment (I 19) in Boden. History Norrbotten Brigade was originally an infantry brigade which in 1964 became the second of a total of five brigades, which was organised as an arctic brigade. In 1994, the brigade, along with the regiment (I 19/P 5) formed the Norrland Mechanised Brigade (MekB 19). The brigade consisted of two tank battalions equipped with Leopard 2s and Combat Vehicle 90s, and two mechanised battalions equipped with CV90. Norrland Anti-Aircraft Battalion
Norrland Anti-Aircraft Battalion ( sv, Norrlands luftvärnsbataljon, Lvbat/I 19), originally Luleå Anti-Aircraft Corps ( sv, Luleå luftvärnskår, Lv 7) was a Swedish Army anti-aircraft unit that operated between 1942 and 2004. The unit was based in Luleå and Boden Garrison. History Through the Defence Act of 1936, the air defense was given a more independent role in the Swedish artillery, which among other things resulted in a number of anti-aircraft divisions being organized, where, among other things, a division was relocated to Luleå. The division was raised as a preparedness division of Karlsborg Anti-Aircraft Artillery Regiment (A 9) on 1 October 1941 under the name Luleå Anti-Aircraft Division (A 9 L). Through the Defence Act of 1942, it was decided to separate the air defense from the artillery, to form its own corps. Norrland Signal Battalion
The Norrland Signal Battalion ( sv, Norrlands signalbataljon), designated Signbat/I 19, originally Norrland Signal Corps ( sv, Norrlands signalkår), designated S 3, was a Swedish Army signal unit, one of the few new formations raised in the 20th century. It was disbanded in 2005. The unit was garrisoned in Norrbotten. History The unit has its origins in a 1915 detached company, Field Telegraph Corps' Detachment in Boden, of the Field Telegraph Corps that was garrisoned in Boden. The company gained the designation Ing 3 det (3rd Engineer Regiment, detachment). The detachment was incorporated into Boden Engineer Corps in 1925, but was split off and formed Boden Signal Company with designation S 1 B in 1937. The company was in 1954 upgraded to a separate battalion, and gained the designation S 3 (3rd Signal Regiment) in 1955. Boden Artillery Regiment
Boden Artillery Regiment ( sv, Bodens artilleriregemente, A 8) is an artillery unit within the Swedish Army that operated in various forms from 1919 to 2004 and again from 2022. It is based in Boden Garrison in Boden. History The unit was raised on 10 September 1919, by a division of the Boden-Karlsborg Artillery Regiment (A 8), where the parts placed at Karlsborg formed Karlsborg Artillery Corps (A 10), and the parts placed at Boden Fortress formed Boden Artillery Regiment (A 8). On 1 July 1937, an air defense company was added to the regiment, which was later transferred to Luleå Anti-Aircraft Corps (Lv 7). After World War II, the idea was that the Swedish defense would be disarmed. This was stated in the Defense Committee's report of 1945, which, prior to the Defence Act of 1948, suggested, among other things, that Norrbotten Artillery Corps (A 5) should be amalgamated with Boden Artillery Regiment (A 8).
