Friesland (district)
Friesland is a district (''Landkreis'') in Lower Saxony, Germany. It is bounded by (from the southeast and clockwise) the districts of Wesermarsch, Ammerland, Leer and Wittmund, and by the North Sea. The city of Wilhelmshaven is enclosed by—but not part of—the district. History The Frisian region was ruled by local chieftains until the 15th century; see East Frisia for details. In 1438 in the northern part of today's Landkreis Friesland the Lordship of Jever was founded. East Frisia was from then on regarded as a hostile territory, and many skirmishes between Jever and East Frisia took place during the 15th and 16th centuries. The last ruler of Jever was Mary of Jever, who ruled until 1575. After her death Jever became a part of Oldenburg, but East Frisia made a claim for the territory as well. Lower Saxony (german: Niedersachsen ; nds, Neddersassen; stq, Läichsaksen) is a German state (') in northwestern Germany. Wilhelmshaven (, ''Wilhelm's Harbour''; Northern Low Saxon: ''Willemshaven'') is a coastal town in Lower Saxony, Germany. It is situated on the western side of the Jade Bight, a bay of the North Sea, and has a population of 76,089. Oldenburg (city)
Oldenburg () is an independent city in the state of Lower Saxony, Germany. The city is officially named Oldenburg (Oldb) (''Oldenburg in Oldenburg'') to distinguish from Oldenburg in Holstein. During the French annexation (1811–1813) in the wake of the Napoleonic war against Britain, it was also known as ''Le Vieux-Bourg'' in French. Diedrich Uhlhorn (3 June 1764 – 1837) was a German engineer, mechanic and inventor. Life Uhlhorn was an engineer, mechanic and inventor, who invented in 1817 the first mechanical tachometer. Between 1817 and 1830 he was inventor of the Presse Monétaire (level coin press known as Uhlhorn Press) which bears his name. He was married. Ludwig Von Weltzien
Peter Friedrich Ludwig von Weltzien was an Oldenburg-Prussian lieutenant general who served in the Austro-Prussian and Franco-Prussian wars. Biography He came from the noble family von Weltzien and was the son of the Oldenburg Major Maximilian von Weltzien (* August 2, 1776; † April 21, 1852) and his wife Johanna née von Reiche (* March 31, 1789; † March 16, 1847), who was a sister of General Ludwig von Reiche. Weltzien attended the Mariengymnasium in Jever and joined the infantry regiment of the Grand Duchy of Oldenburg as a volunteer on June 21, 1829. He was promoted to second lieutenant on December 30, 1832, and attended the General War School in Berlin from 1834 to 1837.
