Bocholt–Herentals Canal
The Bocholt–Herentals Canal (Also known locally as the Kempisch Kanaal or the Maas-Scheldekanaal) is a canal in Belgium that links the Zuid-Willemsvaart at Bocholt, Belgium, Bocholt with the Albert Canal in Herentals, with a length of slightly over 60 kilometres. It is one of the seven canals linking the rivers Meuse and Scheldt. During the Second World War the canal was an important launch point for Operation Market Garden. History The canal was created as part of the link from the river Scheldt to the Meuse that Napoleon Bonaparte planned as the Grand Canal du Nord, but only the stretches Lommel-Beringen, Belgium, Beringen en Venlo-Neuss were built, with a part of the present Zuid-Willemsvaart between Lanaken and Bocholt, Belgium, Bocholt. Bocholt, Belgium
Bocholt (; li, Bóggetj) is a municipality located in the Belgian province of Limburg. On January 1, 2021, Bocholt had a total population of 13,144. The total area is 59.34 km2 which gives a population density of 208 inhabitants per km2. Besides the historical Bocholt centre, it also includes the parishes of Kaulille, Reppel and Lozen. The Priory of Our Lady of Klaarland of the Trappistins is located in Bocholt. Martens brewery, established in 1758, has the second highest production capacity in Belgium at 360 million litres per year. The town is home to Achilles Bocholt handball club. Also, the town is known for its historical event in 1910, when the church tower was lifted off its fundaments and moved 9,40 metres, in order to enlarge the church itself, because of it becoming too small to take in the crowd. Joe's Bridge
Joe's Bridge is the nickname given to Bridge No.9 on the Bocholt-Herentals Canal outside the town of Neerpelt, in the Belgian city of Lommel just south of the Belgian-Dutch border. The bridge was captured by British troops in September 1944, becoming the springboard for the ground offensive of Operation Market-Garden. Capture The original bridge had been destroyed by the Belgian Army in 1940, but the Germans had constructed a wooden pontoon bridge to the west of it. This bridge was taken on the evening of 10 September 1944 by the Irish Guards under the command of Lieutenant-Colonel J.O.E Vandeleur. While the Welsh Guards engaged the German forces around Hechtel, the Irish Guards advanced rapidly north-east through the villages of Aksel, Overpelt and Neerpelt, and launched their combined infantry-tank assault, with artillery support, from the grounds of the zinc processing factory in Overpelt. Neerpelt
Neerpelt (, literally ''Lower Pelt'') is a town in Pelt and a former municipality located in the Belgian province of Limburg. In 2018, the municipality had a total population of 17,174. The total area is 42.78 km². Effective 1 January 2019, Neerpelt and Overpelt were merged into the new municipality of Pelt. Culture Provinciaal Domein Dommelhof is the cultural center of Neerpelt. Hechtel-Eksel () is a municipality located in the Belgian province of Limburg. On 1 January 2018 it had a total population of 12,290 an area of 76.70 km² giving a population density of 150 inhabitants per km². Mol, Belgium
Mol () is a municipality located in the Belgian province of Antwerp. The municipality only comprises the town of Mol. In 2021, Mol had a total population of 37,021 inhabitants. The total area is 114.19 km2. Mol is a popular holiday resort, with many lakes surrounded by woods. A lock is a device used for raising and lowering boats, ships and other watercraft between stretches of water of different levels on river and canal waterways. Overpelt
Overpelt (, literally ''Upper Pelt'') is a town in the municipality of Pelt and a former municipality located in the Belgian province of Limburg. In 2018, the municipality of Overpelt had a total population of 15,478. The municipality consisted of the following population centres: centre, Holheide, Overpelt-Fabriek, and Lindelhoeven. Three hospitals are in Overpelt. In 2005, the St. Mary hospital opened as a merger of hospitals in Lommel and Neerpelt. In addition there is the MS-clinic and a center for disabled, Sainte-Ode.
