The mixed team BC1–2 boccia event at the 2016 Summer Paralympics was held from 10 to 12 September at Riocentro, an exhibition and convention center located in Rio de Janeiro, part of the Games' Barra Cluster of venues. Riocentro
Riocentro is an exhibition and convention center located in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Built in 1977, it is the largest exhibition center in Latin America. Notable events 1981 May Day attack On April 30, 1981, during a May Day music concert, Riocentro was the target of a terrorist attack by hardliner members of the Brazilian military dictatorship (1964–1985). Sergeant Guilherme Pereira do Rosário and then-Captain Wilson Dias Machado, nowadays a Colonel, were responsible for detonating two bombs at the venue. Around 9 p.m., however, one of the bombs exploded in the lap of Sergeant Rosário, killing him and seriously wounding Machado. A second bomb exploded a few miles away at a powerhouse responsible for providing electrical energy to Riocentro; it was thrown over the fence and exploded on the ground, and the electric power supply was never interrupted that evening. Zhang Qi (boccia)
Zhang Qi (; born 24 November 1990) is a Chinese boccia player competing in the BC1 classification. Career Zhang finished 23rd at the 2007 World Cup Championships in Belfast. She finished ninth individually at the 2008 Summer Paralympics in Beijing. There, she also participated in the team competition, where she was the team's youngest participant. China finished in 4th place in the team competition, after losing 4–5 to Spain in the bronze medal match. Zhang finished in 12th place in the 2010 Asian Para Games, where she was eliminated in the group stage with one win and two losses. In the 2011 World Cup in Belfast, she came in 2nd place individually, having lost 2–3 to Kwang Min Ji in the final. Claire Taggart (born 11 February 1995) is a UK Paralympic Boccia player and stationer from Larne, Northern Ireland. As of 2023 Claire is ranked 1st in the BC2 rankings, She is also a fan of local association football team Larne F.C. and regularly does speeches and interviews at Half Time of matches talking about her triumphs in Boccia Life Taggart is from Larne in Northern Ireland. She was identified as a BC2 boccia player in 2014. She was named with David Smith, Nigel Murray and Joshua Rowe as part of the UK's Boccia team. She was 21 when competed at the Rio Paralympics in 2016. No one from Northern Ireland had competed in a Paralympic boccia event before. She would later call her dog Rio. Nigel Murray
Nigel Patrick Murray (born 22 May 1964) is a British Paralympic athlete. He is twelve time English National Champion and seven time British Champion and multiple Paralympic medal winner in the sport of boccia. Murray was born in Leamington Spa. He won gold in the BC2 class during the 2000 Summer Paralympics in Sydney, Australia. Although he only reached the quarter-finals in Athens four years later he followed this up with a silver medal in the same event, and a gold medal in the team event, during the 2008 Summer Paralympics in Beijing, China. Since Beijing Murray has continued to win medals with a bronze in the European championship individual event in 2009 and a silver at the World championship a year later. David John Smith (born 2 March 1989 in Eastleigh) is a Paralympian who made his Paralympic debut on the British boccia team that won the gold medal at the 2008 Summer Paralympics. He competed for Great Britain at the 2012 Summer Paralympics and did so winning Bronze in the Team BC1–2. and Silver in the BC1 individual event watched by a record Boccia crowd at the Excel arena.
