Lake Placid (New York)
The body of water named Lake Placid is a lake in the Adirondack Mountains in northern New York, the United States. It is on the northern side of the Village of Lake Placid. Geography The lake is approximately , and has an average depth of about . It is located in the towns of North Elba and St. Armand, both in Essex County. There are three islands on Lake Placid, named Buck, Moose, and Hawk. Conservation The lake borders the northern part of the village of Lake Placid, and is a source of drinking water for the town. Maintaining water quality in the lake is a major local issue. The lake is fed by springs and Adirondacks mountain streams. There are nearly 300 houses on the lake shore. Because most of the houses are unoccupied much of the year, the water usually remains clean. Local efforts to combat aquatic invasive species have been successful. Jay O'Brien (bobsleigh)
Jay James O'Brien (February 22, 1883 – April 5, 1940) was an American bobsledder who competed in the late 1920s and early 1930s. He won two medals at the Winter Olympics with a gold in the four-man event at Lake Placid, New York in 1932 and a silver in the five-man event at St. Moritz in 1928. At 48 years old, he was the oldest Olympic champion. O'Brien was also a jockey, and was head of the United States Olympic Bobsled Committee at the time of the 1932 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid. Bobsleigh At The Winter Olympics
Bobsleigh is an event in the Winter Olympic Games where a two- or four-person team drives a specially designed sled down an ice track, with the winning team completing the route with the fastest time. The event has been featured since the first Winter Games in 1924 in Chamonix, France, with the exception of the 1960 games in Squaw Valley when the organizing committee decided not to build a track in order to reduce expenses. Other than that exception, the four-man competition has been competed at every game (in 1928, it was a five-man competition). The two-man event was introduced at the 1932 Lake Placid games and a two-woman event was first contested at the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympics.
