Bobby Matos
Bobby Matos (July 24, 1941 – November 11, 2017) was an American Latin jazz percussionist. Life and career Bobby Matos was born in the Bronx, New York on July 24, 1941. He began playing music by hitting pots and pans in his grandmother's apartment. As a youth, he studied with conga drum masters Patato Valdez and Mongo Santamaría. While playing all over New York, he was encouraged to play timbales by Willie Bobo and Tito Puente and in the late 60s attended The New School and the Manhattan School of Music. Around this time, he recorded "My Latin Soul" for Phillips International Records, which made his reputation as a bandleader. Matos toured and recorded with artists Ben Vereen, Bette Midler, Fred Neil, Jim Croce, Joe Loco, Ray Rivera, Miriam Makeba, and scores of others. He had an extensive discography and 5 critically acclaimed albums with Ubiquity Records. One of his last record was "Gratitude" on Dawan Muhammadd's LifeForce jazz label. Latin Jazz
Latin jazz is a genre of jazz with Latin American rhythms. The two main categories are Afro-Cuban jazz, rhythmically based on Cuban popular dance music, with a rhythm section employing ostinato patterns or a clave, and Afro-Brazilian jazz, which includes samba and bossa nova. Afro-Cuban jazz "Spanish tinge"—The Cuban influence in early jazz and proto-Latin jazz African American music began incorporating Afro-Cuban musical motifs in the 19th century, when the habanera (Cuban contradanza) gained international popularity. The habanera was the first written music to be rhythmically based on an African motif. The ''habanera rhythm'' (also known as ''congo'', ''tango-congo'', or ''tango'' ) can be thought of as a combination of tresillo and the backbeat. Jim Croce
James Joseph Croce (; January 10, 1943 – September 20, 1973) was an American folk and rock singer-songwriter. Between 1966 and 1973, he released five studio albums and numerous singles. During this period, Croce took a series of odd jobs to pay bills while he continued to write, record, and perform concerts. After he formed a partnership with songwriter and guitarist Maury Muehleisen, his fortunes turned in the early 1970s. His breakthrough came in 1972; his third album, ''You Don't Mess Around with Jim'', produced three charting singles, including "Time in a Bottle", which reached No. 1 after his death. The follow-up album, '' Life and Times'', included the song " Bad, Bad Leroy Brown", which was the only No. 1 hit he had during his lifetime. Ubiquity Records is an independent United States, American Music label, Record Label that focuses on multiple genres, including but not limited to hip hop, electronic, funk, Latin, Soul music, soul, jazz, singer/songwriters and other musical genres. History Ubiquity Records was conceived by Michael McFadin in the late 80’s after reading an article about how Delicious Vinyl was inspired by an article on Def Jam Records. He founded the label in 1990 along with his wife at the time out of the back of his record shop Groove Merchant Records in the Lower Haight of San Francisco. In 1989, Groove Merchant was a first of its kind (in the U.S.) boutique record shop in the Lower Haight area of San Francisco that specialized in vintage jazz, funk and soul genres. The shop soon got a reputation as ‘the place’ for collectors and musicians to visit when in town.
