Bob Whitcher
Robert Arthur Whitcher (April 29, 1917 – May 8, 1997) was a Major League Baseball pitcher who appeared in nine games for the Boston Braves in 1945. The , left-hander was a native of Berlin, New Hampshire. Whitcher is one of many ballplayers who only appeared in the major leagues during World War II. He made his major league debut in relief on August 20, 1945 against the St. Louis Cardinals at Braves Field. He started three games for Boston, and though he pitched effectively overall, the sixth-place Braves lost all three. The scores were 4–3 (10), 2–0, and 6–2. Whitcher's season and career totals for 9 games are a 0–2 record, 3 starts, 0 complete games, and 3 games finished. Whitcher also appeared in three games as a pinch-runner. In baseball statistics, earned run average (ERA) is the average of earned runs allowed by a pitcher per nine innings pitched (i.e. the traditional length of a game). It is determined by dividing the number of earned runs allowed by the number of innings pitched and multiplying by nine. Thus, a lower ERA is better. Runs resulting from passed balls or defensive errors (including pitchers' defensive errors) are recorded as unearned runs and omitted from ERA calculations. Earned Runs
In baseball, an earned run is any run that was fully enabled by the offensive team's production in the face of competent play from the defensive team. Conversely, an unearned run is a run that would not have been scored without the aid of an error or a passed ball committed by the defense. An unearned run counts just as much as any other run for the purpose of determining the score of the game. However, it is "unearned" in that it was, in a sense, "given away" by the defensive team. Both total runs and earned runs are tabulated as part of a pitcher's statistics. However, earned runs are specially denoted because of their use in calculating a pitcher's earned run average (ERA), the number of earned runs allowed by the pitcher per nine innings pitched (i.e., averaged over a regulation game). In baseball statistics, a relief pitcher is credited with a game finished (denoted by GF) if he is the last pitcher to pitch for his team in a game. A starting pitcher is not credited with a GF for pitching a complete game. Mariano Rivera is the all-time leader in games finished with 952.
