Bob Barron
Robert Frank Barron (January 13, 1928 – August 2, 1991) was a NASCAR driver from Bradenton, Florida. Life and career Barron was born in American Falls, Idaho in January 1928. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He completed in thirty-two Grand National/Nextel Cup Series events in his career, earning five top-tens. Barron debuted to NASCAR in 1960, racing his own car in the fall race at Charlotte. Starting 46th in the fifty-car field, Barron completed most of the race before finishing 30th with mechanical woes. The rest of Barron's starts came in 1961, when Barron completed 31 of the 52 races in the season en route to a 29th-place effort in the points. He earned a 9th-place effort in his season debut at Charlotte Fairgrounds. 1960 National 400
The 1960 National 400 was a Grand National Series stock car race that was held on October 16, 1960, at Charlotte Motor Speedway in Concord, North Carolina. The transition to purpose-built racecars began in the early 1960s and occurred gradually over that decade. Changes made to the sport by the late 1960s brought an end to the "strictly stock" vehicles of the 1950s. Background Around 29,166 spectators traveled to Charlotte Motor Speedway to watch the race. American Falls, Idaho
American Falls is a city in and the county seat of Power County, Idaho. The population was 4,457 at the time of the 2010 census. History American Falls was a landmark waterfall on the Snake River, named after a party of American trappers whose boat went over the falls. The Wilson Price Hunt expedition in 1811 camped at the falls one night and the expedition of John C. Frémont was here in 1843. The Oregon Trail passed north of town, through the present-day reservoir. Power plants first sprang up at the falls in 1901. American Falls was the first town in the U.S. to be entirely relocated. The 1961 Wilkes 200 was a NASCAR Grand National Series event that was held on October 1, 1961, at North Wilkesboro Speedway in North Wilkesboro, North Carolina. Background Through the 1960s and 1970s the NASCAR Grand National Series began focusing on bigger, faster, and longer tracks. Like other short tracks in NASCAR at the time, crowd capacity and purses were small compared to the larger tracks. Over time, Enoch Staley and Jack Combs attempted to keep the facility modern and on pace with the growth of the sport. The West Grandstand was rebuilt with chair-type seats rather than the old bare concrete slabs. New larger restroom facilities were built, and the South Grandstand was expanded. North Wilkesboro Speedway is a short oval racetrack located on U.S. Route 421, about east of the town of North Wilkesboro, North Carolina, or 80 miles north of Charlotte. The NASCAR Cup Series is the top racing series of the National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing (NASCAR). The series began in 1949 as the Strictly Stock Division, and from 1950 to 1970 it was known as the Grand National Division. In 1971, when the series began leasing its naming rights to the R. J. Birmingham International Raceway, (BIR) (formerly Fairgrounds Raceway, Birmingham Super Speedway, Birmingham Super Raceway and Birmingham International Speedway) was a 5/8-mile oval paved racetrack located at the Alabama State Fairgrounds in the Five Points West neighborhood of Birmingham, Alabama.
