Boa Vista Mine
The Boa Vista mine is an open pit niobium and phosphate mine located near the city of Catalão in Goiás state in Brazil. Geologically, it is located on the ''Catalão II'' carbonatite complex. The mine was opened by Anglo American plc, and had an output of 4,700 tons of niobium in 2014. In 2016, the mine, along with several associated processing plants, was sold to China Molybdenum. The sale was strongly criticized by then presidential candidate Jair Bolsonaro during his 2018 presidential campaign, for reasons of economic nationalism. Goiás () is a Brazilian state located in the Center-West region. Niobium
Niobium is a chemical element with chemical symbol Nb (formerly columbium, Cb) and atomic number 41. It is a light grey, crystalline, and ductile transition metal. Pure niobium has a Mohs hardness rating similar to pure titanium, and it has similar ductility to iron. Niobium oxidizes in Earth's atmosphere very slowly, hence its application in jewelry as a hypoallergenic alternative to nickel. Carbonatite () is a type of intrusive rock, intrusive or extrusive rock, extrusive igneous rock defined by mineralogic composition consisting of greater than 50% carbonate minerals. Carbonatites may be confused with marble and may require geochemical verification. The 2018 presidential campaign of Jair Bolsonaro was announced on 3 March 2016. Brazilian federal deputy and former military officer Jair Bolsonaro became the official nominee of the Social Liberal Party during their convention on 22 July 2018. Companhia Brasileira de Metalurgia e Mineração (Portuguese for ''Brazilian Metallurgy and Mining Company''), or CBMM for short, is a Brazilian company that specializes in the processing and technology of niobium, extracted from its pyrochlore mine near the city of Araxá, in the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais. CBMM is by far the world's largest producer of niobium metal and its alloys, providing over 80% of the world's supply. Like the other producers of this metal, the company does not sell raw niobium ore, only ferroniobium, other niobium alloys and oxides, and the pure metal, all produced in its facilities next to the open-pit mine.
