Blyth Railway Station
Blyth railway station served Blyth, Northumberland on the Blyth Branch line in Northeast England. History The Blyth, Seghill and Percy Main Railway opened the line to Blyth on 3 March 1847 and the first station was at Croft Street (now King Street). On 1 May 1867 a new station was opened to replace the original station. It was at the north end of Turner Street (now part of Regent Street) on the site now occupied by Morrisons supermarket and the Community Hospital. The Blyth, Seghill and Percy Main Railway became the Blyth and Tyne Railway in 1853 and was taken over by the North Eastern Railway (NER) in 1874. By the 1890s the increase in goods and passenger traffic was such that a new station was needed. The NER originally planned to build a new station on newly reclaimed land on Bridge Street, between Union Street and Beaconsfield Street, but these were turned down after an objection from the neighbouring Thomas Knight Memorial Hospital, on the grounds of noise. Blyth, Northumberland
Blyth () is a town and civil parish in southeast Northumberland, England. It lies on the coast, to the south of the River Blyth and is approximately northeast of Newcastle upon Tyne. It has a population of about 37,000, as of 2011. The port of Blyth dates from the 12th century, but the development of the modern town only began in the first quarter of the 18th century. The main industries which helped the town prosper were coal mining and shipbuilding, with the salt trade, fishing and the railways also playing an important role. These industries have largely vanished, but the port still thrives, receiving paper and pulp from Scandinavia for the newspaper industries of England and Scotland. The town was seriously affected when its principal industries went into decline, and it has undergone much regeneration since the early 1990s. The North East Joint Transport Committee is a special joint committee of the North East Combined Authority and the North of Tyne Combined Authority. It is responsible for public transport policy in Tyne and Wear, County Durham and Northumberland in England. 2017 Northumberland County Council Election
An election for the Northumberland County Council took place on 4 May 2017 as part of the 2017 local elections in the United Kingdom. All 67 councillors were elected from 66 electoral divisions which returned either one or two county councillors each by first-past-the-post voting for a four-year term of office. The results saw the Conservative Party win 33 seats, one short of a majority. In South Blyth there was a tie between the Conservatives and the Liberal Democrats who decided the results by drawing straws, which the Liberal Democrats won. Bebside Railway Station
Bebside railway station was a railway station that served the village of Bebside in Northumberland, North East England from 1850 to 1964. It is proposed that a new station should be opened close to the original to serve Blyth as part of the Northumberland Line project. History The station opened on 3 August 1850 by the Blyth and Tyne Railway. The station was situated on the south side of Front Street on the A19. The goods shed was north of the level crossing and east of the running lines; this was closed on 9 December 1963. The station was closed on 2 November 1964. Reopening proposals Proposals to reintroduce passenger rail services to the currently freight-only section of the former Blyth and Tyne Railway system have been discussed since the 1990s.
