''Blue Moon'' is the debut studio album by the doo-wop group The Marcels. It was released in 1961 on Colpix Records and included 12 songs. The album was available in mono, catalogue number CP-416. ''Blue Moon'' was produced and arranged by Stu Phillips and recorded in New York at RCA Studios. ''Blue Moon'' features a cover version of the Judy Garland hit "Over the Rainbow". Four decades after the group's debut album was released, the Marcels were inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame. Reception Although the album ''Blue Moon'' failed to chart on the ''Billboard'' albums chart, the first single "Blue Moon" did well. The Marcels
The Marcels were an American doo-wop group known for turning popular music songs into rock and roll. The group formed in 1959 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and signed to Colpix Records with lead Cornelius Harp, bass Fred Johnson, Gene Bricker, Ron Mundy, and Richard Knauss. The group was named after a popular hair style of the day, the marcel wave, by Fred Johnson's younger sister Priscilla. Career In 1961, the Marcels released a doo-wop cover of the ballad " Blue Moon" that began with the bass singer singing, "bomp-baba-bomp-ba-bomp-ba-bomp-bomp... vedanga-dang-dang-vadinga-dong-ding...". The record sold over one million copies and was awarded a gold disc. It is featured in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll. The ''Billboard'' 200 is a record chart ranking the 200 most popular music albums and EPs in the United States. The threshold quantity varies by type (such as album, single, music video) and by nation or territory (see List of music recording certifications). The Official Charts (legal name: The Official UK Charts Company Limited) is a British inter-professional organization that compiles various "official" record charts in the United Kingdom, Ireland and France. The ''Billboard'' Hot 100 is the music industry standard record chart in the United States for songs, published weekly by '' Billboard'' magazine. Chart rankings are based on sales (physical and digital), radio play, and online streaming in the United States. The weekly tracking period for sales was initially Monday to Sunday when Nielsen started tracking sales in 1991, but was changed to Friday to Thursday in July 2015. The Vocal Group Hall of Fame (VGHF) is an American-based hall of fame that honors vocal groups throughout the world in every genre of music. Headquartered in the Columbia Theatre in Sharon, Pennsylvania, it includes a theater and a museum. It was established in 1998 by Tony Butala, the founding member (and now only surviving original member) of The Lettermen. The VGHF typically inducts sixteen artists annually. Unlike the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, artists are inducted within categories, with each category having at least one representative. These categories include 1940s, 1950s, 1960s, 1970s, 1980s, and duos. The Vocal Group Hall of Fame releases a public ballot, allowing everyone to vote for both the nominees and the inductees. Monaural or monophonic sound reproduction (often shortened to mono) is sound intended to be heard as if it were emanating from one position.
