Blokker, Netherlands
Blokker is a village in the northwest Netherlands, in the province of North Holland and the region of West Friesland. History and geography Blokker consists of two parts: Westerblokker in the municipality of Hoorn, and Oosterblokker in Drechterland. Until 1979, Blokker was a separate municipality. The village was one of the locations of the only three concerts on Dutch soil by The Beatles, during their 1964 world tour. That they played in Blokker was due to Ben Essing, the son of the mayor. Essing had also managed to get other acts to play in the Blokker auction hall, and organized a "Dutch Teener Fest" in 1964 and 1965, which made international headlines. West Friesland (region)
West Friesland ( nl, West-Friesland, fy, West-Fryslân) is a contemporary region in the Northwest of the Netherlands, in the province of North Holland. History The River Vlie (also called Fli), is an extension of the IJssel branch of the Rhine River. The river divides the northern Netherlands into two parts, the western and the eastern part. In the eleventh century, heavy rainfall caused the river to flood over large parts of the land. The Zuiderzee bay (previously a lake called Lacus Flevo by Roman authors) was formed, separating West Friesland from the contemporary Province of Friesland. In the Middle Ages, the Westflinge area of West Friesland became an island, bordered on the north by the Medem and Zijpe inlets, and to the south by various interconnecting lakes (now polder land) that were connected with the Zuiderzee. Hoorn Kersenboogerd () is a suburban railway station, in the Kersenboogerd district in Hoorn, Netherlands. The station opened on 29 May 1983, and is on the Zaandam–Enkhuizen railway The Zaandam–Enkhuizen railway is a railway line in the Netherlands running from Zaandam to Enkhuizen, passing through Purmerend and Hoorn. The line was opened between 1884 and 1885 by the ''Hollandsche IJzeren Spoorweg-Maatschappij''. Stations .... Hoorn Railway Station
Hoorn is the main railway station of the town of Hoorn, Netherlands. Overview The station opened on 20 May 1884 as part of the Zaandam–Hoorn railway line. On 6 June 1885 the line was extended to Enkhuizen. Other lines that opened were the Hoorn - Medemblik line in 1887, and the Hoorn - Heerhugowaard line in October 1898. The station has a ticket hall, a florist, a music shop and a restaurant. In 1985 another station opened in Hoorn, to the east, Hoorn Kersenboogerd. Now behind the station is the steam railway from Hoorn - Medemblik, the Steamtrain Hoorn Medemblik. Ben Essing
Ben Essing (22 April 1934 – 15 February 1994) was a Dutch impresario from Blokker, Netherlands. The son of the town's mayor, he was instrumental in getting a number of international acts to play in the local auction hall where ordinarily produce was sold, most notably The Beatles, who played two shows there during their 1964 world tour, their only concerts in the Netherlands. Biography Essing was born in Dirkshorn, a small village near Schagen in North Holland. His father was a ''gemeentesecretaris'', formerly the head of a municipality's civil servants, and later became mayor of Blokker. In 1956, he was a law student and the president of the local Catholic youth club; to raise money for the club he got the Dutch Swing College Band, at the time the best-known Dixieland band in the country, to play in ''Op Hoop van Zegen'', Blokker's auction hall—his father was the president of the auction. Postal codes in the Netherlands, known as ''postcodes'', are alphanumeric, consisting of four digits followed by two uppercase letters.
