Bloc Català
The Bloc Català () is a Catalan nationalist political party in Pyrénées-Orientales (France) (or Northern Catalonia as Bloc Català refers to it). It was established on October 23, 2001. It defines itself as a center-left wing political party. One of its proposals is the establishment of a "northern Catalan region" in France. This party was one of the organizations that promoted a movement against the denomination Septimanie, proposed by Georges Frêche, the president of the region of Languedoc-Roussillon. As a symbol of a so-called Catalan resistance against that move, they will adopt a disguised donkey as mascot. It participates since 2002 in all the elections of Northern Catalonia: cantonal, legislative, regional and European elections. So far, it has not won election. Catalan Nationalism
Catalan nationalism is the ideology asserting that the Catalans are a distinct nation. Intellectually, modern Catalan nationalism can be said to have commenced as a political philosophy in the unsuccessful attempts to establish a federal state in Spain in the context of the First Republic (1873-1874). Valentí Almirall i Llozer and other intellectuals that participated in this process set up a new political ideology in the 19th century, to restore self-government, as well as to obtain recognition for the Catalan language. These demands were summarized in the so-called ''Bases de Manresa'' in 1892. It met very little support at first. Northern Catalonia
Northern Catalonia, North Catalonia, ; french: Catalogne (du) Nord ; oc, Catalonha (del) Nòrd; es, Cataluña (del) Norte) French Catalonia or Roussillon refers to the Catalan-speaking and Catalan-culture territory ceded to France by Spain through the signing of the Treaty of the Pyrenees in 1659 in exchange of France's effective renunciation on the formal protection that it had given to the recently founded Catalan Republic. Septimanie
Septimania (french: Septimanie ; oc, Septimània ) is a historical region in modern-day Southern France. It referred to the western part of the Roman province of Gallia Narbonensis that passed to the control of the Visigoths in 462, when Septimania was ceded to their king, Theodoric II. The region was also variously known as Gallia, Arbuna or Narbonensis. The territory of Septimania roughly corresponds with the modern French former administrative region of Languedoc-Roussillon that merged into the new administrative region of Occitanie. Georges Frêche
Georges Frêche (July 9, 1938 – October 24, 2010) was a French politician. He served as President of the Languedoc-Roussillon Region from 2004 until his death: prior to that, he had been mayor of Montpellier for 27 years, and was also a former member (''député'') of the National Assembly. Frêche had been a member of the French Socialist Party until he was expelled on January 27, 2007. A long-time political figure within French political circles, Frêche was an extremely controversial character, considered by some a great builder and visionary, while criticised by others and judged in court for his controversial remarks, which were sometimes interpreted as racist. Catalan Donkey
The Catalan donkey ( ca, Ase Català, italic=yes or , es, Asno Catalán, italic=yes) is a breed of large domestic donkeys from the historic region of Catalonia, now in north-eastern Spain and south-western France. Approximately 80% of the breed population is in the modern autonomous community of Catalonia, and approximately 20% is in the historic Roussillon region of France.
