Blinasaurus Townrowi Skull
''Blinasaurus'' is a name of an extinct genus of prehistoric brachyopid found in Triassic geological formations of Australia. The type species is '' Platyceps wilkinsonii'' Stephens, 1887. The genus was established by John W. Cosgriff in 1969 to incorporate the type, discovered in New South Wales, and the author's new fossil species, '' Blinasaurus henwoodi'', describing type material found in Blina Shale in the Kimberley region of northwest Australia. The genus was represented by three species, however, the type species (''Platyceps wilkinsonii'' Stephens, 1887) was assigned to a new monotypic genus as ''Platycepsion wilkinsoni''. Brachyopidae is an extinct family of temnospondyl labyrintodonts. They evolved in the early Mesozoic and were mostly aquatic. Taxonomy The species is assigned to a currently monotypic genus, the synonym ''Platyceps wilkinsonii'', a name published in 1887 by the Australian palaeontologist William Stephens, was nominated as the type. A revision in 1964 by Oskar Kuhn assigned the species to the genus ''Platycepsion'' to replace the earlier combination, which was invalidated by an earlier use of the name ''Platyceps'' for a colubrid genus of snakes. Blina Shale
Blina Shale is a fossil bearing geological formation located in the Kimberley region of Northwest Australia. The location is rich in deposits of vertebrate material, and the site of previously unknown Triassic species. Flora and invertebrate species have also been identified in the deposits, including microplankton and microflora. Description The site is located near Derby, Western Australia. The shale bed extends inland from King Sound at the coast, forming claypans where it is rarely exposed, with exploratory drilling indicating it is between thick. The upper parts of the bed are finer layers sediments; these are evident in some ridges of the Erskine range. As with the Kockatea Shale in the same region, the bed was formed by deposition in marine environs and at river deltas and estuaries. The Kimberley is the northernmost of the nine regions of Western Australia.
