Bleckley County, Georgia
Bleckley County is a county located in the central portion of the U.S. state of Georgia. As of the 2020 census, the population was 12,583. The county seat is Cochran. History The county was named for Logan Edwin Bleckley, a soldier and Justice of the Supreme Court of Georgia. The state constitutional amendment to create the county was proposed by the Georgia General Assembly on July 30, 1912, and ratified November 5, 1912. Bleckley County was formerly home to Middle Georgia College, the oldest two-year public college in the nation. In 2013 it merged with Macon State College to become Middle Georgia State University. Bleckley County High School made news in March 2010 for allowing a same-sex couple to attend its senior prom, after another same-sex couple in Mississippi were denied attendance at another senior prom. Bleckley County Courthouse
Bleckley County Courthouse is the historic county courthouse of Bleckley County. It is located at Second Street on Courthouse Square in the county seat of Cochran.William Lonnie Barlow, ''Bleckley County'', Arcadia Publishing, 2010, p. 7-10. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on September 18, 1980. History Bleckley County was formed in 1912. The county jail and courthouse were erected the following year. The county courthouse opened on January 1, 1914, and has continuously been the county's courthouse since. The courthouse predates the city hall and city auditorium, which were built in 1928. The architect J.J. Baldwin of the architectural firm of Gayre & Baldwin designed the courthouse, one of eight Georgia courthouses designed by Baldwin. Interstate 16 (I-16), also known as Jim Gillis Historic Savannah Parkway, is an east–west Interstate Highway located entirely within the US state of Georgia. It carries the hidden designation of State Route 404 (SR 404) for its entire length. I-16 travels from downtown Macon, at an interchange with I-75 and SR 540 to downtown Savannah at Montgomery Street (exit 167B). It also passes through or near the communities of Dublin, Metter, and Pooler. I-16's unsigned designation of SR 404 has a spur that is signed in Savannah.
