Blantyre Celtic F.C.
Blantyre Celtic Football Club were a Scottish football club that played under the auspices of the Scottish Junior Football Association. Formed in 1914 as Blantyre United, they changed their name to Blantyre Celtic two years later. Their home ground was near Springwell in Blantyre and they had as local rivals Blantyre Victoria, known locally as the Vics. In many ways they were the poorer cousin, as they existed in a poorer area of the village and lacked the financial support that the Vics gained from having a large social club attached to their home ground. The club reached the semi-finals of the Scottish Junior Cup three times: (1923–24, 1937–38 and 1945–46) but lost on each occasion. Between 1982 and 1986, their Craighead Park ground was also used by the Glasgow Tigers speedway team as their home track. Blantyre, South Lanarkshire
Blantyre ( or ; gd, Baile an t-Saoir) is a town and civil parish in South Lanarkshire, Scotland, with a population of 16,900. It is bounded by the River Clyde to the north, the Rotten Calder to the west, the Park Burn to the east (denoting the boundary with the larger adjoining town of Hamilton) and the Rotten Burn to the south. Blantyre was the birthplace of David Livingstone, the 19th-century explorer and missionary, and because of Livingstone's work, the second-largest city in Malawi is named after it. Tom Adamson
Thomas Kay Adamson was a Scottish professional footballer, best remembered for his time as a left back in the Football League with Bury and Brentford. He later had a short tenure as player-manager of Irish League club Ards. Playing career Early years and Bury A left back, Adamson began his career at Scottish junior clubs Craighead, Cambuslang Rangers, Blantyre Celtic and moved to England to join Second Division club Bury in 1920. Over the course of 9 years at Gigg Lane, Adamson made 286 appearances and helped the Shakers to promotion back to the First Division in the 1923–24 season. Brentford Adamson dropped down to the Third Division South to sign for Brentford prior to the beginning of the 1929–30 season. Paul Wilson (23 November 1950 – 18 September 2017) was an Indian-born Scottish professional footballer, who played for Celtic, Motherwell and Partick Thistle. His football career peaked in season 1974–75 after being moved to play as a striker when he scored 29 goals for Celtic, including two in that season's Scottish Cup final win. He played for Scotland that season, making him the only non-white player to represent the full Scotland team in the 20th century, and the first footballer with Asian origins to represent any of Scotland, England, Wales and Northern Ireland at senior level. William Smith (born 6 December 1943) is a Scottish retired professional football wing half who played in the Football League for Brentford. Career Early years Born in Glasgow, Smith began his career as an inside left with junior club Blantyre Celtic before securing a move to Scottish League First Division club Celtic in 1960. He failed to appear for the first team and departed Celtic Park in 1963. Brentford Smith moved to England to sign for Third Division club Brentford on a free transfer in June 1963. Playing as a wing half, Smith made something of a breakthrough into the first team during the 1963–64 season and made 18 appearances. Over the course of the following two seasons, Smith lost his place to Mel Scott and made just 12 appearances. Jimmy Johnstone
James Connolly Johnstone (30 September 1944 – 13 March 2006) was a Scottish footballer who played as an outside right. Known as "Jinky" for his elusive dribbling style, Johnstone played for Celtic for 13 years, and was part of the 'Lisbon Lions', the team who won the 1967 European Cup Final, as well as winning nine consecutive Scottish championships. He scored 129 goals for Celtic in 515 appearances and was voted the club's greatest ever player by fans in 2002. Johnstone also won 23 caps for Scotland. He finished third in voting for the 1967 Ballon d'Or, and was inducted into the Scottish Football Hall of Fame when it was inaugurated in 2004.
