Demographics History A post office was established at Blanco, Indian Territory on August 31, 1901. Blanco was named for Ramón Blanco y Erenas, one-time governor general of Cuba. The post office opened August 31, 1901. At the time of its founding, the community was located in the Moshulatubbee District of the Choctaw Nation. It was located in either Atoka County or Tobucksy County. The settlement was in the area of the county boundary, and differing maps of the era show it in each. State Highway 63 (Oklahoma)
State Highway 63 (abbreviated SH-63) is a 96.7 mile (155.6 km) state highway in southeastern Oklahoma. It runs from U.S. Highway 69 in Kiowa to the Arkansas state line. SH-1 forms a concurrency with SH-63 for , nearly 40 percent of the highway's length. SH-63 has one spur route, designated as SH-63A. SH-63 was added to the state highway system on November 6, 1935 as a short link highway between Talihina and SH-2. The highway was gradually extended to its present length between then and 1960. When the current incarnation of SH-1 was established, the middle of SH-63 was turned over to the new highway, leaving SH-63 in two separate parts. The two sections were connected via a concurrency in the early 1980s. Gene Stipe
Eugene E. "Gene" Stipe (October 21, 1926 – July 21, 2012) was an American politician from Oklahoma. He was a member of the Democratic Party. Early life and career Gene Stipe was born in Blanco, Oklahoma, the son of Jacob Irvin Stipe, a farmer and coal miner, and Eva Lou Stipe. Following a stint in the United States Navy in the mid-1940s, he was elected to the Oklahoma House of Representatives at the age of 21 in 1948, and served as Assistant Floor Leader from 1949 to 1953. He graduated from law school at the University of Oklahoma while serving in the state House of Representatives, and living at the fire station in Norman, Oklahoma. Personal life Stipe married Agnes L. Minter on February 3, 1949, and had one daughter and three grandchildren. They were married until her death on September 29, 2002, at the age of 82. Tobucksy County was a political subdivision of the Choctaw Nation of Indian Territory, prior to Oklahoma becoming a state. It was part of the Moshulatubbee District, or First District, one of three administrative super-regions. History The county was also spelled, variously, as Toboxy, Tobuxy and Tobaksi. Its name in Choctaw was ''Tobaksi Kaunti'', for the Choctaw word meaning “coal.” Coal was known to be present in the area at the county's creation and later became its chief industry, in a string of coal mines stretching from McAlester and Perryville eastward. Atoka County, Choctaw Nation
Atoka County was a political subdivision of the Choctaw Nation of Indian Territory, prior to Oklahoma being admitted as a state. The county formed part of the Nation's Pushmataha District, or Third District, one of three administrative super-regions. History The county was created in 1850 as Shappaway County, a name it held until 1854. Shappaway was a corruption of the Chickasaw or Choctaw words, ''shapah'', or “flag,” and ''welih'', “to hold up to view.” In late 1854 the General Council of the Choctaw Nation renamed it Atoka County in honor of Captain William Atoka. Moshulatubbee District
Moshulatubbee District was one of three administrative super-regions comprising the former Choctaw Nation in the Indian Territory. Also called the First District, it encompassed the northern one-third of the nation. In some historic records it is spelled Mushulatubbe. The Moshulatubbee District was named in honor of Chief Moshulatubbee, a Choctaw Indian warrior and statesman. Moshulatubbee was chief of the ''Okla Tannap'' ("Lower Towns") District in the original Choctaw Nation of the Southeast.
