Arthur Blakiston
Sir Arthur Frederick Blakiston, 7th Baronet, MC (d Salisbury ) was a rugby union international wing who represented England twelve times between 1920 and 1925, and the British Lions in all four test matches during their 1924 tour of South Africa. Blakiston was educated at Bedford School, Trent College and Emmanuel College, Cambridge. He served in the Great War as an officer in the Royal Field Artillery and was awarded the Military Cross. He played for Northampton, Liverpool, Blackheath and the Barbarians. Charles Robert Blakiston (6 July 1825 – 1 September 1898) was a New Zealand politician. Biography Blakiston was born in 1825. His parents were Sir Matthew Blakiston, 3rd Baronet and Lucy Mann (granddaughter of Horatio Mann) of Ashbourne, Derbyshire. Sir Matthew Blakiston, 1st Baronet was his great-grandfather. He came to Melbourne in 1851 with his brother A. F. Blakiston and shortly afterwards to Canterbury. He took land at Ferry Road (rural section (RS) 101), which he subdivided in the 1880s. The resulting village became known as Ashbourne (after Blakiston's birthplace) and is these days part of Woolston. Blakiston married Mary Anna Harper, the second daughter of Bishop Harper, on 23 September 1858. John Blakiston
John Blakiston (c. 1603–1649), was a member of the English parliament, one of the regicides of King Charles I of England, a prominent mercer and coal merchant, puritan and anti-Episcopalian. Biography John Blakiston was born in 1603 in Sedgefield, County Durham, as the third son of Marmaduke Blakiston, Prebendary of York and Durham Cathedral. In 1626 he married Susan Chamber. He was a fervent financial supporter of the Puritans migrating to America, though he himself never left the country. In 1636 he entered into an ideological dispute with Yeldard Alvey, an Arminian vicar at Newcastle, accusing him of heresy. Alvey emerged victorious from the fray, thanks to the support from Archbishop William Laud. Blakiston was fined and excommunicated. He served as a member of parliament for Newcastle in the Long Parliament where he voiced republican ideas early on, but did not take up his seat until 1641 due to a contest over the result. Sir Matthew Blakiston, 1st Baronet (c. 1702 – 14 July 1774) was a British merchant, grocer and baronet. He was the son of George Blakiston and his wife Elizabeth Kay, daughter of Matthew Kay. He was an Alderman of London from 1750 to 1769, was elected Sheriff of London in 1754 and became the 442nd Lord Mayor of London in 1761. He was knighted at Kensington Palace in 1759 and was created a Baronet, of the City of London on 22 April 1763. Blakiston served as colonel of the Green Regiment of the London Militia. He died at Jermyn Street in London. Blakiston married firstly Margaret Hall, daughter of Reverend Charles Hall. Oswell Blakeston was the pseudonym of Henry Joseph Hasslacher (1907–1985), a British writer and artist who also worked in the film industry, made some experimental films, and wrote extensively on film theory. He was also a poet and wrote in non-fiction areas including travel, cooking and pets. His pseudonym combined a reference to the writer Osbert Sitwell with his mother's maiden name.
