John Blagrave
John Blagrave of Reading (d. 1611) was an English Tudor mathematician, astronomer and designer of astronomical and mathematical instruments. His astrolabe designs, which he described in his writings, were advanced for Britain. He devoted himself to mathematical study and was called, by Anthony à Wood, "the flower of mathematicians of his age" Biography John Blagrave was born as the second son to John Blagrave of Bullmarsh and Anne (daughter of Sir Anthony Hungerford of Down Ampney) in Berkshire at an unknown date sometime in the 1560s. The Blagraves were a branch of that landed gentry family of Calcot Park, Berkshire. He was educated in Reading School and went to St John's College, Oxford for an education in mathematics, though he never received a degree. Joseph Blagrave
Joseph Blagrave (1610–1682) was an English astrologer. Life Little is known of Blagrave's life. He was born in Reading, Berkshire in 1610, the youngest of four sons of Alexander and Margaret Blagrave, of a branch of that family of Calcot Park near Reading;Burke's Landed Gentry, 17th edition, edited by L. G. Pine, Burke's Peerage Ltd, 1952, pages 200-201 he was a nephew of the mathematician John Blagrave, from whom he is thought to have inherited a small estate in nearby Swallowfield. He and his wife Susan had a son Joseph in May 1640; Susan died shortly afterwards, on 2 June. Herbert Blagrave
Herbert Henry Gratwicke Blagrave (3 March 1899 – 4 July 1981) was an English cricketer and racehorse trainer. He was a slow bowler who played for Gloucestershire. Early life Blagrave was born at Charlton Kings near Cheltenham, son of John Gratwicke Blagrave (1853-1926), of Hambrook House, Charlton Kings, Captain (and hon. Major) in the North Somerset Imperial Yeomanry, and his wife, Fanny Julia (d. 1939), daughter of Sir Alexander Beaumont Churchill Dixie, 10th Baronet, and widow of Lord Henry Somerset, son of Henry Somerset, 8th Duke of Beaufort. He had a younger brother, Peter, born 1901. The Blagrave family was of Calcot Park in Berkshire, until it was sold by the heir, his father's elder brother, Henry Barry Blagrave. John Blagrave (major)
John Blagrave (1630 – March 1704) was an English politician who sat in the House of Commons at various times between 1660 and 1685. Blagrave was the son of Anthony Blagrave of Bulmershe Court at Earley in Berkshire and his wife Dorothy, daughter of Thomas Dolman of Shaw House in the same county. The Blagraves were a branch of that family of Calcot Park, Berkshire. He was baptised in the parish church at Sonning on 12 August 1630. He was educated at St John's College, Oxford being awarded BA in 1651 and MA in 1653. He was a Fellow of St John's and was later at Middle Temple in 1655. In 1660, Blagrave was returned unopposed as Member of Parliament for Reading in the Convention Parliament, but did not stand in 1661. He was re-elected MP for Reading in 1679 and sat until 1685. Daniel Blagrave
Daniel Blagrave (1603–1668) was a prominent resident of the town of Reading, in the English county of Berkshire. He was Member of Parliament for the Parliamentary Borough of Reading over several periods between 1640 and 1660, and was also one of the signatories of King Charles I's death warrant. Pine, Burke's Peerage Ltd, 1952, pages 200-201 Daniel Blagrave was educated at Reading School and trained to be a lawyer. Daniel Blagrave's uncle was the mathematician John Blagrave of Southcote Manor, in what is now the Reading suburb of Southcote, and Daniel inherited the manor on John's death. Mark Blagrave (born 1956) is a Canadian writer of plays, short stories, and novels, and a former university professor and administrator. Born in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Blagrave was raised in Southern Ontario and Bermuda before finishing high school in Saint John, New Brunswick. After earning his BA at Mount Allison University in Sackville, New Brunswick, and his MA and PhD from the University of Toronto, he returned to teach at the University of New Brunswick in Saint John and then, for twenty years, at Mount Allison University. In 2009, he returned to Ontario as Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Social Science at Huron University College, where he stayed until 2016 when he settled back in New Brunswick in St Andrews By-the-Sea. Three of Blagrave's plays have been contracted for professional production (''We Happy Few,'' and ''Scape'' by Live Bait Theatre, and ''Nomentacke'' by NotaBle Acts Festival) and a dozen others have been produced by university theatres in New Brunswick.
