Blackwood Bulldogs
Blackwood Bulldogs were a rugby league team based in Blackwood, Caerphilly, Wales. They played in the Welsh Championship of the Rugby League Conference. History ''Blackwood Bulldogs'' were formed in the summer of 2006 at Glan-yr-Afon Park, the home of Blackwood RFC. They joined the Eastern Division of the Welsh Premier. The Bulldogs first competitive match was at the Scott McRorie rugby league nines competition held at Glan-yr-Afon Park on 28 May 2006. The Welsh Premier reformed as one division in 2007. Blackwood won the Welsh Premier in 2009 beating Bridgend Blue Bulls 38 - 22 in the Grand Final. Rugby league football, commonly known as just rugby league and sometimes football, footy, rugby or league, is a full-contact sport played by two teams of thirteen players on a rectangular field measuring 68 metres (75 yards) wide and 112–122 metres (122 to 133 yards) long with H shaped posts at both ends. Bridgend Blue Bulls
The Blue Bulls (known as Bridgend Blue Bulls RLFC between 2003 and 2012) are a rugby league side based in Pyle, Wales. They play in the Welsh Premier of the Rugby League Conference. They are the most successful amateur rugby league team in Wales, having won the Welsh Premier a record seven times in their two incarnations, as well as winning the Harry Jepson Trophy twice against teams from England, Wales and Scotland. History The Blue Bulls were formed in 2003 and joined the newly formed Welsh Division of the Rugby League Conference. Since then, guided under head coaches Karl Hocking & Jon Purnell, they have won the league every year until 2008. In 2003 and 2004 they won all their games. In 2005 they lost just one, before drawing one game and losing one in the 2006 and 2007 seasons respectively. The South Wales Men's League is a summer rugby league competition for amateur teams in South Wales. The competition was formed in 2003 as the RLC Welsh Premier. Following the 2012 restructure of amateur rugby league in Great Britain, it was renamed the South Wales Premiership. History The Rugby League Conference (RLC) was founded in 1997 as the ''Southern Conference'', a 10-team pilot league for teams in the South of England and English Midlands. The RLC first expanded into Wales in 2001 when Cardiff Demons joined the South West division. In 2003, the RLC expanded with the creation of the Welsh Premier division. This division had 6 teams in the inaugural season and marked the first all Welsh rugby league division. The ''Super League Show'' is the BBC's principal rugby league programme, shown on BBC One in the North of England on Monday evenings, repeated nationally on BBC Two on Tuesday lunchtimes and also on BBC iPlayer. The programme, produced by PDI Media at BBC Yorkshire's studios in Leeds, is presented by Tanya Arnold with match commentary from Dave Woods and Andy Giddings and analysis from a variety of studio guests from Super League. Rugby league nines (or simply nines) is a version of rugby league football played with nine players on each side. The game is substantially the same as full rugby league, with some differences in rules and shorter games. Nines is usually played in festivals, as its shorter game play allows for a tournament to be completed in a day or over a single weekend. In July 2021, International Rugby League (IRL) chair Troy Grant stated that the organization was considering a bid for rugby league nines to be played at the 2032 Summer Olympics in Brisbane. Blackwood RFC
Blackwood Rugby Football Club is a Welsh rugby union team. Blackwood RFC was established in Blackwood in 1889 and in 1918 gained the status of membership of the Welsh Rugby Union. They play their home games at Glan-Yr-Afon Park. History and development In the 1960s the club purchased an old police station and converted it for use as a clubhouse. In 1997 a new 800-seater stand was constructed with the capital coming from match sponsorship and donations. In 1998 Blackwood RFC purchased approximately one and a half acres of land adjacent to its playing field at Glan-Yr-Afon from British Gas. This purchase also included an on site disused gas service centre. This property was purchased with the full support of the WRU. In 2002 the club undertook a renovation of the gas service centre. The old clubhouse in Hall Street was closed in the May 2003 with the focus of developing a new clubhouse for the start of the 2003 season.
