With the slogan "the coal country newspaper", the ''Blackwater Herald'' had a strong focus on the town of Blackwater which was experiencing rapid population growth at the time the newspaper was launched due to the coal mining boom in the district. The newspaper also published local news and information pertaining to other communities within the Duaringa Shire such as Bluff, Dingo and Duaringa. The ''Blackwater Herald'' was originally independently owned but was bought by Australian Provincial Newspapers in 1992. Blackwater is a rural town and locality in the Central Highlands Region, Queensland, Australia. In the , Blackwater had a population of 4,702 people. It is a town in a significant coal mining area in Central Queensland. The name of the township was inspired by the dark colour of local waterholes. Geography Six major open cut coal mines and one underground dot the landscape surrounding the town and provide its main employment opportunities. The town is also situated close to the Blackdown Tableland National Park which lies to the southeast and Blackwater coal mine located south of the town. Emerald is to the west. The Shire of Duaringa was a local government area in the Capricornia region of Queensland, Australia. Duaringa Shire covered an area of 18,201 square kilometres and had a population of 6,744 according to the . Bluff, Queensland
Bluff is a rural town and locality in the Central Highlands Region, Queensland, Australia. In the , Bluff had a population of 373 people. Geography The town is located on the Capricorn Highway in Central Queensland, north west of the state capital, Brisbane. Bluff's location between some of Queensland's largest coal mines and the port of Gladstone has led to it becoming a major interchange station for large coal trains, some up to two kilometres long. Dingo is a rural town and locality in the Central Highlands Region, Queensland, Australia. In the , the locality of Dingo had a population of 340 people. Geography The town is on the Capricorn Highway, by road north-west of the state capital Brisbane and by road west of the regional centre of Rockhampton. Duaringa is a town in the Central Highlands Region and a locality split between the Central Highlands Region and the Aboriginal Shire of Woorabinda in Central Queensland, Australia. In the , Duaringa had a population of 262 people. Geography Duaringa is on the Capricorn Highway, west of Rockhampton. The Dawson River forms the eastern boundary of the locality, while the Mackenzie River forms the northern boundary. The Mackenzie River crossing on Apis Creek Road is approximately 20 kilometres north of the Duaringa township. Emerald is a rural town and locality in the Central Highlands Region, Queensland, Australia. In the , Emerald had a population of 14,906 people.
