Portland State University
Portland State University (PSU) is a public research university in Portland, Oregon. It was founded in 1946 as a post-secondary educational institution for World War II veterans. Elmer Feig
Elmer Edward Feig (May 9, 1897 - October 20, 1968) was an American unlicensed architect credited with designing over 81 apartment buildings between 1925 and 1931 in Portland, Oregon. Feig also designed single-family residences. Many of Feig's designs survived urban renewal and have become a central feature of Portland neighborhoods. Some of Feig's buildings are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Early years Elmer Edward Feig was born May 9, 1897, in Atwater, Minnesota. Within a few years, the family moved to Barnes County, North Dakota, where Elmer's father worked as a hardware store clerk. The family settled in Portland in 1910. Feig's first job was as a draftsperson with the Portland firm of Fenner Redicut Homes in 1914. He began working as a structural and mechanical architect in Vancouver, Washington, for G. M. Harry Mittleman
Harry Mittleman (May 24, 1900 – August 1, 1985) was a prominent building contractor, apartment owner, and real estate developer in Portland, Oregon. During his career, he built more than 20 apartment buildings and owned 30 bank buildings. Mittleman owned the Sovereign Hotel for 34 years. The Mittleman Jewish Community Center at the Schnitzer Family Campus is named after Mittleman's wife, Helen Mittleman. Early years Harry Mittleman was born in 1900 within a region of Europe he called Russian Poland. His father was a peddler. The family immigrated to the United States in 1911 to escape the Persecution of Jews prior to World War I, settling in Omaha, Nebraska. The Jeanne Manor Apartment Building is a seven-story apartment hi-rise located in downtown Portland, Oregon, in the United States, listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Architects Bennes and Herzog finished the Art Deco structure in 1931. The Jeanne Manor faces the South Park Blocks at the corner of Southwest Park Avenue and Clay Street. Designed to reflect some of the features of Beaux-Arts apartment buildings along New York City's Park Avenue, the structure was reputedly selected by a group of American architects as an outstanding example of modern apartment design. Named for the daughter of owner Harry Mittleman, the building cost $400,000 and was part of a $1,000,000 investment made by Mittleman in SW Park Avenue apartment construction during the late 1920s and early 1930s.
