Blackhawk (radio)
''Blackhawk'' was a 1950 ABC radio series adapted from the long-running ''Blackhawk'' comic book about the team of adventurous World War II aviators. According to broadcasting researcher Harrison Boyd Summers, author of ''A Thirty-Year History of Programs Carried on National Radio Networks in the United States, 1926-1956'', ''Blackhawk'' was an unsponsored half-hour show that aired on Wednesdays at 5:30pm.Summers, Harrison Boyd. ABC Radio (United States)
ABC Audio is a radio syndicator, radio network and digital audio network in the United States. It is under the ownership of The Walt Disney Company, parent company of American Broadcasting Company (ABC), with satellite distribution being handled by Skyview Networks. It launched on January 1, 2015, as ABC Radio; it was renamed ABC Audio in 2019. Background ABC Radio originally began after the split of NBC Red and NBC Blue (later Blue Network) networks with ABC taking over operations of the latter from RCA in 1943 before adopting its name 2 years later. ABC Radio was known to broadcast the first nationwide report of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. Kennedy was shot in a motorcade in Dallas, Texas, at 18:30 UTC on November 22, 1963, and ABC Radio's Don Gardiner anchored the network's initial bulletin at 18:36:50 UTC, minutes before any other radio or television network followed suit. Michael Fitzmaurice (actor)
Michael Fitzmaurice (April 28, 1908 - August 31, 1967) was a radio actor, best known for his portrayal of Superman. Early years Born in Chicago, Fitzmaurice was the son of Leonard Fitzmaurice and Hettie Kenton. His father was a singer, and his mother "was known as the youngest serpentine dancer in the United States ndlater worked in radio." The American Broadcasting Company (ABC) is an American commercial broadcast television network. It is the flagship property of the ABC Entertainment Group division of The Walt Disney Company. Blackhawk is the eponymous fictional character of the long-running comic book series ''Blackhawk'' first published by Quality Comics and later by DC Comics. Harrison Boyd Summers
Harrison Boyd Summers (1894-1980) was a broadcast historian and educator who conducted audience surveys of radio listeners. After several years as an advance man for the Chautauqua circuit, Summers was awarded a Ph.D. in economics from the University of Missouri in 1931. His first academic post was at Kansas State College (now University) where in 1937 he began conducting large-scale radio audience surveys. He soon joined the industry he had been studying, holding positions in New York City radio and serving as a member of the Radio Research Council (1937–46). He was director of public service programs for NBC's Eastern Division from 1939 to 1942 and manager of the public service division of the Blue Network (later American Broadcasting Company) from 1942 to 1946. James Judson Harmon (21 April 1933 – 16 February 2010), better known as Jim Harmon, was an American short story author and popular culture historian who wrote extensively about the Golden Age of Radio. He sometimes used the pseudonym Judson Grey, and occasionally he was labeled Mr. Nostalgia. Fiction During the 1950s and 1960s, Harmon wrote more than 50 short stories and novelettes for ''Amazing Stories'', ''Future Science Fiction'', ''Galaxy Science Fiction'', '' If'', ''The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction'', ''Venture Science Fiction Magazine'' and other magazines. ''The Adventures of Superman'' is a long-running radio serial that originally aired from 1940 to 1951 featuring the DC Comics character Superman. The serial came to radio as a syndicated show on New York City's WOR on February 12, 1940. On Mutual, it was broadcast from August 31, 1942, to February 4, 1949, as a 15-minute serial, running three or, usually, five times a week. From February 7 to June 24, 1949, it ran as a thrice-weekly half-hour show. Jonathan Arthur Goerss (June 14, 1918 – February 24, 1982), known as Jon Arthur, was an American entertainer. As Big Jon Arthur, he was the host of the Saturday morning children's radio series Big Jon and Sparkie. Sparkie, "the little elf from the land of make-believe, who wants more than anything else in the world to be a real boy,” was actually the recorded voice of Jon Arthur played at a fast speed. Arthur was born in New Kensington, Pennsylvania to Rev. Daniel Friedrich Goerss, a Lutheran minister, and Esther Eleanor Leverentz. His parents were both from Niagara County, New York.
