Blackfriars F.C.
Blackfriars Football Club was a 19th-century Scottish association football club based in Parkhead, in Glasgow. History The club was founded in 1876 and had 25 members in its first season, which made it one of the smallest clubs in the city. The club took its name from Blackfriars Parish Church, which was being built in Dennistoun at the time of formation, its parent church on the High Street having just been demolished. It became a member of the Scottish Football Association in September 1877. Blackfriars entered the Scottish Cup three times. Its first entry, in 1877–78, was the only one with any profit, as the club walked over the now-defunct Hyde Park Loco Works in the first round, and got past the second round by drawing twice with Rovers. Thornliebank
Thornliebank ( Scots: ''Thonliebank'', Scottish Gaelic: ''Bruach nan Dealgan'') is a suburban area in East Renfrewshire, in the west central Lowlands of Scotland. Part of the Greater Glasgow conurbation, it is located on the Auldhouse Burn about south of Glasgow city centre, and just outside the city's administrative boundaries (the closest neighbourhoods within Glasgow, to the west and north of Thornliebank, being Arden, Carnwadric, Eastwood, Jenny Lind and Mansewood). The neighbouring East Renfrewshire town of Giffnock lies directly to the east, with Rouken Glen Park to the south. The original village was founded in the 18th century and began to develop after the opening of a printworks in 1778, and subsequently other light industry. 1879–80 Scottish Cup
The 1879–80 Scottish Cup – officially the Scottish Football Association Challenge Cup – was the seventh season of Scotland's most prestigious football knockout competition. With 142 entrants, this season saw the largest number of teams to compete for the trophy since its inception. Three-time defending champions Vale of Leven lost their first match in the competition for four seasons when they were knocked out in the first round, losing 4–3 to rivals Dumbarton. Queen's Park regained the trophy as they won the competition for the fourth time after beating Thornliebank 3–0 in the final on 21 February 1880. Format As with the previous competitions, the seventh edition of the Scottish Cup took on the format of a traditional knockout tournament. Parkhead ( sco, Pairkheid) is a district in the East End of Glasgow. Its name comes from a small weaving hamlet at the meeting place of the Great Eastern Road (now the Gallowgate and Tollcross Road) and Westmuir Street. Glasgow's Eastern Necropolis cemetery was laid out in the area in 1847 beside the Gallowgate. History The area flourished with the discovery of coal in 1837 and grew into an industrial centre. In 1897 William Beardmore and Company became famous with the production of high grade steel and castings at the local ''Parkhead Forge'', founded about 1837 and extended between 1884 and 1914. After years of decline, the massive plant was closed in 1976, and in 1986 the construction of the first phase of The Forge Shopping Centre began on the site.
