Blackboy Hill Training Camp
Blackboy Hill was named after the Australian native "black boy" plants, Xanthorrhoea preissii, which dominated the site which is now absorbed into Greenmount, Western Australia. Originally a military camp, the facilities and adjacent structures were on the hill that is now used by St Anthony's Primary School and Church, and Greenmount Primary School. The remaining land (which has been left as a memorial to the troops who used the training camp) is known on official documents and maps as the Blackboy Hill Commemorative Site, but local signage tends to refer to the location simply as ''Blackboy Hill''. First Australian Imperial Force
The First Australian Imperial Force (1st AIF) was the main expeditionary force of the Australian Army during the First World War. It was formed as the Australian Imperial Force (AIF) following Britain's declaration of war on Germany on 15 August 1914, with an initial strength of one infantry division and one light horse brigade. The infantry division subsequently fought at Gallipoli between April and December 1915, with a newly raised second division, as well as three light horse brigades, reinforcing the committed units. After being evacuated to Egypt, the AIF was expanded to five infantry divisions, which were committed to the fighting in France and Belgium along the Western Front in March 1916. ''The Swan Express'' was a weekly English language newspaper published in Midland, Western Australia. History ''The Swan Express'' was published from 1 December 1900 until 8 November 1979. It was printed by William Heller at 184 Barrack St, Perth, and published at The Crescent, Midland Junction. It was established by Frederick Davis, who had previously worked as the second in charge at ''The Sunday Chronicle''. Davis owned and edited the newspaper for 8 and a half years before he sold the business to Herbert James Lambert, who took control on Monday 3 April 1909. Lambert was an experienced journalist and had previously worked as sub-editor at the ''Morning Herald''. The human history of Western Australia commenced between 40,000 and 60,000 years ago with the arrival of Aboriginal Australians on the northwest coast. The first inhabitants expanded across the east and south of the continent. Midland is a suburb in the Perth metropolitan region, as well as the regional centre for the City of Swan local government area that covers the Swan Valley and parts of the Darling Scarp to the east. The Mundaring and Hills Historical Society (MHHS) is a local history society for the Shire of Mundaring, based in Mundaring, Western Australia.
