Blackberri (born Charles Timothy Ashmore; May 31, 1945 – December 13, 2021) was an American singer-songwriter and community activist. His music focused on issues such as civil rights, LGBT rights, and pollution. During the AIDS epidemic, Blackberri worked in HIV education and prevention in Black communities. Early life Blackberri was born in Buffalo, New York and raised in Baltimore. Blackberri was drafted into the U.S. Navy in 1965. He was discharged in 1966 for being gay. Blackberri stated "I was under investigation because one of my shipmates turned me in... they had evidence, they arrested me, went through my personal belongings and found incriminating letters and other things." He got stranded in New York City, washing dishes and doing drugs. Career Blackberri studied voice at University of Arizona and sang the blues. Shanti Project
The Shanti Project is a non-profit human services agency based in San Francisco and founded in 1974 by Dr. Charles Garfield in Berkeley, CA. Its goals are to provide peer support and guidance to people affected by HIV/AIDS, cancer, and other life-threatening conditions. Since its inception, several organizations adhering to the Shanti model have been created in the United States, including projects in Los Angeles, California, Seattle, Washington and Laguna Beach, California. Shanti Project began providing its first AIDS specific services in 1981 and became solely an AIDS service organization in 1984. In 2001 the organization also began serving Women with breast cancer in addition to people who are HIV+. Then in 2013, renamed the Women's Cancer Project for Margot Murphy because of a funding source secured through the generous family of Margot Murphy. San Francisco General Hospital
The Priscilla Chan and Mark Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center (ZSFG) is a Public hospital in San Francisco, California, under the purview of the city's Department of Public Health. It serves as the only Level I Trauma Center for the 1.5 million residents of San Francisco and northern San Mateo County. It is the largest acute inpatient and rehabilitation hospital for psychiatric patients in the city. The African-American LGBT community, otherwise referred to as the Black LGBT community, is part of the overall LGBT culture and overall African-American culture. The initialism ''LGBT'' stands for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender. A landmark event for the LGBT community, and the Black LGBT community in particular, was the Stonewall uprising in 1969, in New York City's Greenwich Village, where Black activists including Stormé DeLarverie (who instigated the uprising) and Marsha P. ''Looking for Langston'' is a 1989 British black-and-white film, directed by Isaac Julien and produced by Sankofa Film & Video Productions. It combines authentic archival newsreel footage of Harlem in the 1920s with scripted scenes to produce a non-linear impressionistic storyline celebrating black gay identity and desire during the artistic and cultural period known as the Harlem Renaissance in New York.
