Black Science Orchestra
Black Science Orchestra was a musical project headed chiefly by the British DJ and producer Ashley Beedle, which produced a number of disco and rare groove-inspired house records in the 1990s. History Enlisting the help of Rob Mello and John Howard, Black Science Orchestra made their debut in 1992 with "Where Were You", a reworking of the classic Trammps tune "Where Were You (When the Lights Went Out?)". The record was given exposure by Frankie Knuckles, and their subsequent releases found favour with both Knuckles and the Masters at Work team over the course of 1992 and 1993.Legal disputes, however, delayed the release of the debut Black Science Orchestra album, and when it finally appeared in 1996 it was with a revised line-up of Beedle, Marc Woolford & Uschi Classen. Ashley Beedle
Ashley Beedle (born November 25, 1962, in Hemel Hempstead, England) is a British house music DJ and producer. He was a member of the groups Black Science Orchestra and X-Press 2 in addition to releasing material under his own name. Career Beedle first began DJing in the late 1980s during the heyday of acid house. After hearing Norman Jay on KISS FM, he became more interested in deep disco. Junior Boy's Own
Junior Boy's Own is an English record label specialising in electronic dance music. Underworld, The Chemical Brothers and X-Press 2 are its most successful artists. History The origins of the label go back to 1987, when a group of young clubbers started a fanzine named ''Boys Own'', inspired by a similar fanzine for Liverpool football fans called ''The End'', edited by future singer of The Farm, Peter Hooton. The Boys Own crew, consisting of Terry Farley, Andrew Weatherall, Cymon Eckel and Steven Hall, knew fellow Chelsea fan Paul Oakenfold and through their connections with him they were invited to the early acid house club nights that Oakenfold was holding in London. As the crew began to become more involved in clubbing, the fanzine began to cover the nascent scene, becoming its key chronicler and influencing a wave of similar fanzines across the country. X-Press 2 are an English electronic dance music duo. The members are DJ Diesel (Darren House) and DJ Rocky (Darren Rock). Ashley Beedle left to pursue solo projects in 2009. They were DJ Award winners in 2002 and Ivor Novello winners in 2003. History Explaining the band's name, Darren Rock (aka 'DJ Rocky') explained that acid house legend Terry Farley of Fire Island came up with it. Rocky said, "We were originally going to call ourselves Rock 2 House, but arleywasn't really into that. So he renamed us X-Press 2. He basically liked the S'Express so kind of adapted that." X-Press 2 first rose to underground prominence through the tracks "Muzik Express" and "London Xpress" which were both released on Junior Boys Own Records. X-Press 2 also gained plaudits on the club scene for regularly playing in clubs with their multi-decked (up to six decks with three DJs) sets. FFRR
FFRR Records (sometimes credited as Full Frequency Range Recordings) is a dance music label previously run and founded by English DJ Pete Tong. Originally the dance music label of London Records, FFRR is currently a sublabel of Parlophone, a division of Warner Music Group. The label name references the recording technique (full frequency range recording) developed by Sir Edward Lewis's Decca Records. The original incarnation of FFRR was founded in 1986, and also had two subsidiaries: Double F Double R Records and Ffrreedom Records. The label's ear logo was copied from the original FFRR logo source, as found at the top of the London Records logo. The label name was stylized as ffrr, rather than FFRR. FFRR's parent company London was run by Roger Ames as his own 'semi-autonomous indie' from within the major label group PolyGram, so when Ames joined Warner Music as Chair and CEO, London/FFRR went with him. Disco is a genre of dance music and a subculture that emerged in the 1970s from the United States' urban nightlife scene. Masters At Work
Masters at Work is the American garage house production and remix team of "Little" Louie Vega and Kenny "Dope" Gonzalez. The duo has produced music together under the names MAW, KenLou, Sole Fusion, Hardrive, and Nuyorican Soul. They have been referred to as one of the most influential artists in the history of house music. Biography In the late 1980s, Kenny "Dope" Gonzalez organized a series of block parties with his friend Mike Delgado under the name "Masters at Work". Gonzalez loaned the name to Todd Terry for his 1987 singles "Alright Alright" and "Dum Dum Cry", with editing by Mike Delgado and Franklin Martinez. Frankie Knuckles
Francis Warren Nicholls, Jr. (January 18, 1955 – March 31, 2014), better known as Frankie Knuckles, was an American DJ, record producer and remixer. He played an important role in developing and popularizing house music in Chicago during the 1980s, when the genre was in its infancy. In 1997, Knuckles won the Grammy Award for Remixer of the Year, Non-Classical. Due to his importance in the development of the genre, Knuckles was often called "The Godfather of House Music".
