Black Samson
''Black Samson'' is a 1974 American blaxploitation film, starring Rockne Tarkington, Carol Speed, William Smith and Connie Strickland. The film was written by Daniel B. Cady (who also produced) and Warren Hamilton Jr., directed by Charles Bail and released by Warner Bros. It was the directorial debut for Bail, more commonly billed as Chuck Bail, a renowned stunt co-ordinator best known for playing himself in Richard Rush's ''The Stunt Man''. Plot Armed with a quarterstaff and his pet African lion named Hoodoo, noble nightclub owner Samson (Rockne Tarkington) does his best to keep his neighborhood clean of crime and drugs. When vicious mobster Giovanni "Johnny" Nappa ( William Smith) tries to muscle in on Samson's territory, Samson takes a stand against Nappa and his flunkies. Rockne Tarkington
William Rockne Tarkington, Jr. (May 14, 1932 – April 5, 2015) was an American stage, film and television actor. Career Born in Junction City, Kansas, Tarkington began his career as a stage actor, and made the transition to television with guest appearances in episodes of ''The Alfred Hitchcock Hour'', ''Kraft Suspense Theatre'', ''The Man from U.N.C.L.E.'', ''Ben Casey'', '' Mission: Impossible'', '' Bewitched'', and many others. Tarkington was also the first credited black actor to appear on ''The Andy Griffith Show'', and the only African American on the show to ever have a speaking part. Blaxploitation Films
Blaxploitation is an ethnic subgenre of the exploitation film that emerged in the United States during the early 1970s. The term, a portmanteau of the words "black" and "exploitation", was coined in August 1972 by Junius Griffin, the president of the Beverly Hills-Hollywood NAACP branch. He claimed the genre was "proliferating offenses" to the black community in its perpetuation of stereotypical characters often involved in crime. The genre does rank among the first after the race films in the 1940s and 1960s in which black characters and communities are the protagonists and subjects of film and television, rather than sidekicks, antagonists or victims of brutality. The genre's inception coincides with the rethinking of race relations in the 1970s. Ivan “Judo” Gene LeBell (October 9, 1932 – August 9, 2022) was an American martial artist, stunt performer, actor, and professional wrestler. Nicknamed "The Godfather of Grappling", he popularized grappling in professional fighting circles, serving as a precursor to modern mixed martial arts. He worked on over 1,000 films and TV shows and authored 12 books. In 2000, the United States Ju-Jitsu Federation (USJJF) promoted LeBell to 9th dan in jujitsu and taihojutsu. On August 7, 2004, the World Martial Arts Masters Association promoted him to 10th degree. In February 2005, the USJJF made him 9th dan in judo. Nick Dimitri
Nick Dimitri (December 27, 1932 – October 20, 2021) was an American stuntman and actor best known as Charles Bronson's character's opponent in the climax of '' Hard Times'' (1975). In addition to fisticuffs, his specialty was dying violently on screen. He was a regular stuntman on the World War II TV series ''The Rat Patrol'' and a double for action actors Sean Connery and William Smith. He helped set up the fights in ''Darker than Amber'' and ''Any Which Way You Can''. Dimitri also played Angie Dickinson's character's undead husband in the 1973 cult TV movie ''The Norliss Tapes''.
