Black Reel Awards Of 2023
The 23rd Annual Black Reel Awards ceremony, presented by the Foundation for the Augmentation of African-Americans in Film (FAAAF) and honoring the best films of 2022, took place on February 6, 2023, and streamed on blackreelawards.com at 5:00 p.m. PST / 8:00 p.m. EST. During the ceremony, FAAAF presented the Black Reel Awards in 24 categories. The film nominations were announced on December 15, 2022. '' Black Panther: Wakanda Forever'' and ''The Woman King'' led the film nominations with fourteen each, with the latter winning a total of six awards, the most wins by any film, including Outstanding Film. With her third win for Outstanding Costume Design for ''Black Panther: Wakanda Forever'', Ruth E. Carter became the most decorated technical award winner in Black Reel Awards history. The Woman King
''The Woman King'' is a 2022 American historical action drama film about the Agojie, the all-female warrior unit that protected the West African kingdom of Dahomey during the 17th to 19th centuries. Set in the 1820s, the film stars Viola Davis as a general who trains the next generation of warriors to fight their enemies. It is directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood and written by Dana Stevens, based on a story she wrote with Maria Bello. The film also stars Thuso Mbedu, Lashana Lynch, Sheila Atim, Hero Fiennes Tiffin, and John Boyega. Bello conceived the idea for ''The Woman King'' in 2015 after visiting Benin, where the kingdom used to be located, and learning the history of the Agojie. ''Devotion'' is a 2022 American biographical war film based on the 2015 book ''Devotion: An Epic Story of Heroism, Friendship, and Sacrifice'' by Adam Makos, which retells the comradeship between naval officers Jesse Brown and Tom Hudner during the Korean War. It is directed by J. D. Dillard and written by Jake Crane and Jonathan Stewart. Chinonye Chukwu ( ; born May 19, 1985) is a Nigerian-American film director best known for the drama films ''Clemency'' and ''Till''. She is the first African-American woman to win the U.S. Dramatic Grand Jury Prize at Sundance. Early life and education Of Igbo heritage, Chukwu was born in Port Harcourt, Nigeria. When she was just over a year old, her family moved to Oklahoma, and moved again to Fairbanks, Alaska when she was six. They visited Nigeria often. Keith Beauchamp (born 1971) is an American film director, filmmaker based in Brooklyn and best known for his extensive investigation of and films about the lynching of Emmett Till. Beauchamp was born in 1971 and grew up in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. He attended Southern University where he studied criminal justice until 1997, when he left the school to pursue a film career in New York City. Beauchamp began researching and writing for a documentary about the Till case in the late 1990s. He identified and interviewed witnesses and accomplices who were not originally interviewed in the case, and has been credited with building trust and accessing information through these interviews that would not have been otherwise provided to law enforcement officials. ''Till'' is a 2022 biographical drama film directed by Chinonye Chukwu and written by Michael Reilly, Keith Beauchamp, and Chukwu, and produced by Beauchamp, Reilly, and Whoopi Goldberg.
