Black Point (Antarctica)

The area was visited by early 19th century sealers. The name of the point is a descriptive one. Fortín Rock is a sea stack lying off Black Point. Fortín Rock
Fortín Rock () is a conspicuous rock or sea stack lying off Black Point, Livingston Island, in the South Shetland Islands. The name appears in a 1953 volume of Argentine sailing directions for Antarctica and Argentine charts. In Spanish, "fortín" means small fort. Sandanski Point
Sandanski Point (Nos Sandanski \'nos san-'dan-ski\) is the point forming the north side of the entrance to Stoyanov Cove on the east coast of Ioannes Paulus II Peninsula, Livingston Island in the South Shetland Islands, Antarctica, projecting 600 m into Hero Bay and formed by an offshoot of Oryahovo Heights. Agüero Point
Agüero Point is the southeast extremity of a trapezoid-shaped and mostly ice-covered headland projecting 900 m from the east coast of Ioannes Paulus II Peninsula into Hero Bay, Livingston Island in the South Shetland Islands, Antarctica. The point forms the north side of the entrance to Prisoe Cove and, together with nearby Arroyo Point, separates the termini of Urdoviza Glacier to the north from Medven Glacier to the south. The feature is named after Clodomiro Agüero Soto, a crewman of the Chilean naval vessel ''Yelcho'' which rescued the Ernest Shackleton's expedition fellows members from Elephant Island in 1916. Avitohol Point
Avitohol Point ( bg, нос Авитохол, nos Avitohol, ) is a point on the north coast of Livingston Island, Antarctica projecting into Hero Bay to form the west side of the entrance to Skravena Cove and the southeast side of the entrance to Prisoe Cove. It is surmounted by Fletcher Nunatak and Belev Nunatak. Desolation Island (South Shetland Islands)
Desolation Island is one of the minor islands in the South Shetlands archipelago, Antarctica situated at the entrance to Hero Bay, Livingston Island. Cape Shirreff
Cape Shirreff is a prominent cape at the north end of the rocky peninsula which separates Hero Bay and Barclay Bay on the north coast of Livingston Island, in the South Shetland Islands of Antarctica. The cape was named by Edward Bransfield in 1820 after Captain William H. Shirreff, the British commanding officer in the Pacific at that time. The seasonal scientific field station Doctor Guillermo Mann Base has been operated by Chile since 1991 and the Shirreff Base by the USA since 1996. Description Situated on a small, ice-free peninsula forming the northern extremity of Ioannes Paulus II Peninsula, which is protected by the Convention on the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources Ecosystem Monitoring Programme and requires a permit to enter. Seal Hunting
Seal hunting, or sealing, is the personal or commercial hunting of seals. Seal hunting is currently practiced in ten countries: United States (above the Arctic Circle in Alaska), Canada, Namibia, Denmark (in self-governing Greenland only), Iceland, Norway, Russia, Finland and Sweden. Most of the world's seal hunting takes place in Canada and Greenland. The Canadian Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) regulates the seal hunt in Canada. It sets quotas (total allowable catch – TAC), monitors the hunt, studies the seal population, works with the Canadian Sealers' Association to train sealers on new regulations, and promotes sealing through its website and spokespeople. The DFO set harvest quotas of over 90,000 seals in 2007; 275,000 in 2008; 280,000 in 2009; and 330,000 in 2010. Porlier Bay
Porlier Bay ( bg, залив Порлиер, zaliv Porlier, ) is the 3 km wide bay indenting for 1.6 km the north coast of Ioannes Paulus II Peninsula on Livingston Island in the South Shetland Islands, Antarctica. It is entered between Punta del Medio and Black Point (Antarctica), Black Point, and includes Spiller Cove on the southeast. The area was visited by early 19th-century seal hunting, sealers. The feature is named after Brigadier Rosendo Porlier y Asteguieta (1771–1819), commander of the Spanish Navy, Spanish naval squadron whose flagship San Telmo (ship), ''San Telmo'' sank off the island with 644 men on board including Porlier in September 1819.
