''Black Is White'' is a 1920 American silent drama film starring Dorothy Dalton and directed by Charles Giblyn. It was produced by Thomas H. Ince and distributed by Paramount Pictures. The movie is based on a novel, ''Black is White'', by George Barr McCutcheon. The film's spelling differs from the spelling of the novel. The plot is one in which a woman stands almost any form of abuse from a man and finally forgives him at the moment she has opportunity for the revenge she has always sought, such stories being somewhat popular at the time. Charles Giblyn
Charles Giblyn (September 6, 1871 – March 14, 1934) was an American film director and actor of the silent era. He directed nearly 100 films between 1912 and 1927. He also appeared in 23 films between 1914 and 1934. He was one of the founders of the Motion Picture Directors Association. Beginning in 1914, Giblyn worked with the Universal Motion Picture Manufacturing Company. He founded Albion Productions, a film production company, in 1922. Giblyn was also the screenwriter for ''Scandal'' (1917). On Broadway, Giblyn acted in ''The Song of the Sword'' (1899), ''Wheels Within Wheels'' (1899), and ''The Ambassador'' (1900). Giblyn was born in Watertown, New York and died in Los Angeles, California. Joseph Granby
Joseph Granby (March 24, 1885 – September 22, 1965) was an American film actor whose career spanned from 1915 to the 1960s. Born in Boston he started in movies in 1915, mostly shorts, acting for Universal, its predecessor Independent Motion Picture Company, Rex, Victor and others and appeared at Fox Studios supporting Valeska Suratt in her vamp-style films. His final silent film was in 1921 and for the rest of the 1920s and 1930s appeared in Broadway plays (begun in 1911). When he returned to motion pictures in 1943, his appearances were uncredited. His final years saw work in television shows and movies. Granby is perhaps best remembered today as the voice of the Angel Joseph in the classic holiday film ''It's a Wonderful Life''. Lillian Lawrence
Lillian Lawrence (February 17, 1868 – May 7, 1926) was an American theatre and silent film actress. Her daughter Ethel Grey Terry was also an actress. Biography Lawrence was born in either Alexandria, Virginia or Alexander, West Virginia but moved to San Francisco at the age of two. She made her stage debut there as a 13-year-old girl as a chess piece in the operetta ''The Royal Middy''. Following that, she sang opera for the California Theatre (San Francisco), California Theatre for three years. At age 20, she joined a touring company, followed by a role in ''The Two Orphans (play), The Two Orphans''. Afterwards, she joined a repertory theatre in Oakland, California, Oakland. In 1882 at the age of 14, she gave birth to her daughter Ethel, but Lawrence remained unmarried. In 1892, she moved to New York City and then back to Dayton, Ohio the next year. Claire Mersereau (September 20, 1894 – June 26, 1982) was an American stage and film actress of the silent film era. She appeared several in films including ''Black Is White, Black is White'' (1920) directed by Charles Giblyn and played the leading role in a touring production of ''Polyanna'' in 1919. She was the sister of actress Violet Mersereau. Career In 1904, at the age of twelve, Mersereau performed before King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra of Denmark, Alexandra in a production of ''Her Own Way'' alongside by Maxine Elliott. Mersereau played the titular character in ''Ashes'' (1916), a film about a maid in an Alaska boarding-house who inherits a fortune. The film was directed by Robert F. Hill and also starred Nellie Slattery, Stanley Walpole and Joseph Granby. She also appeared with Walpole in ''The Seeds of Redemption'' (1917) and ''The Mantle of Deceit'' (1916).
