Black Diamond District
The A Black Diamond District is a high school conference of the Virginia High School League which draws its members from the western part of Southwest Virginia. The schools in the Black Diamond District compete in A Region D with the schools of the A Cumberland District, and the A Lonesome Pine District. The district gets its name from the "black diamond," a nickname for the coal whose coal mining, mining formed the backbone of the region's economy until the 1980s. Haysi and Honaker have a larger enrollment than the other schools in the district, sometimes leading to disparities, mostly in American football, football. This is aggravated by Council choosing not to field a football team due to the schools small size and inability to produce enough athletes (typical Council football teams consisted of 15-20 players). A Cumberland District

The schools in the Cumberland District compete in A Region D with the schools of the A Black Diamond District and the A Lonesome Pine District. In the 2013 VHSL realignment, the members of the Cumberland District also comprise Conference 48 for the first round of post-season competition. Coal

Buchanan County, Virginia
Buchanan County () is a United States county in far western Virginia, the only county in the state to border both West Virginia and Kentucky. The county is part of the Southwest Virginia region and lies in the rugged Appalachian Plateau portion of the Appalachian Mountains. Its county seat is Grundy. Buchanan County was established in 1858 from parts of Russell and Tazewell counties, and it was named in honor of then-President James Buchanan. Grundy Senior High School
Grundy High School is a public high school located east of Grundy, Virginia on Slate Creek in Buchanan County, Virginia. It is part of the Buchanan County Public Schools system. Athletic teams compete in the Virginia High School League's A Black Diamond District in 2A West Conference 39. Grundy is a National Blue Ribbon School. Following the closing of Grundy Junior High at the end of the 1994-1995 school year, the High School's name was changed from Grundy Senior High School to Grundy High School. Wrestling The school is renowned for its wrestling program, which has won 23 state championships, the most of any high school in Virginia, and has been ranked nationally.
