Black Cap (London Pub)
The Black Cap was a pub in Camden Town, London known for its drag cabaret, and popular from the mid-1960s until it closed in April 2015. History The pub was initially called the Mother Black Cap after a local legend concerning a witch, and had that name, according to licensing records, as early as 1751. In the winter of 1965/66 the pub became predominantly known for a homosexual clientele, and in the later 20th century it became known for its drag queen cabaret, and promoted itself as the "Palladium of drag". Drag acts under the 'Baton' of Tony Page, who became the first Resident Compére from 1969 until 1976 and Resident Duo Frankie Rae and David Thallon, Hinge and Bracket started their careers at the pub. A notable regular performer at The Black Cap was Rex Jameson's drag persona, Mrs Shufflewick. A performance was recorded there in 1972. Mother Red Cap
The World's End is a pub and music venue at 174 Camden High Street in Camden Town, London, England, just south of Camden Town tube station with an additional branch at Finsbury Park, 23 Stroud Green Rd, London. It is a long established business, formerly known as Mother Red Cap or Mother Damnable's. The first reference to a tavern in the area occurs in 1690. At that time the locality was entirely rural and the proprietors relied on trade passing by on the road from London to Hampstead and Highgate. The name ''Halfway House'' was accordingly also used. It is not clear whether there was one establishment in the first half of the 18th century or two, but by 1751 the ''Mother Red Cap'' and the ''Mother Black Cap'' (now The Black Cap (London pub), Black Cap) were both in business. Paul James O'Grady MBE DL (born 14 June 1955) is an English comedian, broadcaster, actor, writer and former drag queen. He achieved notability in the London gay scene during the 1980s with his drag queen persona Lily Savage, very popular in the 1990s. O'Grady subsequently dropped the character and in the 2000s became the presenter of various television and radio shows, most notably ''The Paul O'Grady Show''. Born to a working-class Irish migrant family in Tranmere, Cheshire, O'Grady moved to London in the late 1970s, initially working as a peripatetic care officer for Camden Council.
