Black Butte (Glenn County, California)
Black Butte is a mountain butte located in the Northern Coast Ranges of California south of Mendocino Pass. It rises to an elevation of north of the Black Butte River. The mountain on the Mendocino National Forest is the highest point in county of Glenn County. In spite of the difference in elevation between the river valley at and Black Butte, the summit's prominence is moderate due to the neighboring Plaskett Meadows. The high elevation of the mountain and plateau bring heavy winter snowfall and a low average annual temperature. US Forest Highway 7, a dirt road connection between the eastern and western segments of State Route 162 passes to the north of Black Butte. However, this route is closed in winter due to heavy snowfall. This is a list of highest points in California, in alphabetical order by county. All elevations use the North American Vertical Datum of 1988 (NAVD88), the currently accepted vertical control datum for United States, Canada and Mexico. Elevations are from the National Geodetic Survey (NGS) when available. Others are from the United States Geological Survey topographic maps when available. These can be found on the Peakbagger.com web pages. Elevations followed by a plus sign (+) were interpolated by the compiler using topographic map contour lines. The true elevation is between that shown and the elevation plus the contour line interval which is forty feet in most instances. Elevations from the NGS are rounded to the nearest whole number. Glenn County is a county located in the U.S. state of California. As of the 2020 United States Census, 2020 census, the population was 28,917. The county seat is Willows, California, Willows. It is located in the Sacramento Valley, in the northern part of the California Central Valley. Northern Coast Ranges
The Coast Ranges of California span from Del Norte or Humboldt County, California, south to Santa Barbara County. The other three coastal California mountain ranges are the Transverse Ranges, Peninsular Ranges and the Klamath Mountains. Black Butte River
The Black Butte River is located in the Mendocino National Forest of northern California in Glenn and Mendocino counties. It is a tributary to the Middle Fork Eel River and flows northward for from its headwaters near Round Mountain to the confluence with the Middle Fork Eel River. The Northern California Coastal Wild Heritage Wilderness Act of 2006 added of the Black Butte River (and a tributary Cold Creek) to the National Wild and Scenic Rivers System, of which are Wild status and are Scenic. Mendocino National Forest
The Mendocino National Forest is located in the Coastal Mountain Range in northwestern California and comprises 913,306 acres (3,696 km2). It is the only national forest in the state of California without a major paved road entering it. There are a variety of recreational opportunities — camping, hiking, mountain biking, paragliding, backpacking, boating, fishing, hunting, nature study, photography, and off-highway vehicle travel. The forest lies in parts of six counties. In descending order of forestland area they are Lake, Glenn, Mendocino, Tehama, Trinity, and Colusa counties.
