Black Bridge (The Nilgiris)
The Black Bridge (now the Manekshaw Bridge) is a historic bridge in Wellington, The Nilgiris District, India. At 43.5 metres long, the bridge spans across the Mynala stream, which joins the Coonoor River 2 kilometres downstream. The bridge connects Wellington Cantonment to the Ooty - Coonoor road (NH181). The bridge was constructed in 1858, but it collapsed before its completion. The bridge was constructed again in 1878 using wooden structures. It was christened the Waterloo Bridge, as the beginning of the Waterloo Road, which leads all the up to present-day Madras Regimental Centre. The bridge has locally been known as ''Black Bridge'' ever since, as the bridge was built of Burmese teak and was coated with black tar. In 2009, after the most recent reconstruction, the bridge is named "Manekshaw Bridge" in honour of the Late Field Marshal SHFJ Manekshaw, who had made Coonoor his final resting place. Wellington, Tamil Nadu
Wellington is a town in the Nilgiris District of the Indian States and territories of India, state of Tamil Nadu, three kilometres to the north of Coonoor on the NH181. The town includes a Wellington Bazaar, and the Wellington Cantonment. The Wellington Cantonment is home to The Madras Regimental Centre (MRC) and The Defence Services Staff College (DSSC). The Nilgiri Mountain Railway, Nilgiri Passenger train passes through Wellington, which also has a railway station. The settlement of Wellington lies immediately outside of Wellington Cantonment, which was earlier known as Jakkatalla (or Jacketallah) from the Badagas, Badaga Village of that name to the north of it. The Nilgiris district () is one of the 38 List of districts of Tamil Nadu, districts in the South India, southern Indian States and union territories of India, state of Tamil Nadu. Nilgiri ( en, Blue Mountains) is the name given to a range of mountains spread across the borders among the states of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Kerala. Ooty
Ooty (), officially known as Udhagamandalam (also known as Ootacamund (); abbreviated as Udhagai), is a city and a municipality in the Nilgiris district of the South Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It is located north west of Coimbatore and south of Mysore and is the headquarters of the Nilgiris district. It is a popular hill station located in the Nilgiri Hills. It is popularly called the Queen of Hill Stations. It was the summer capital of the Madras Presidency. Coonoor, natively spelt as Kunnur (), is a Taluk and a municipality of the Nilgiris district in the Indian State of Tamil Nadu. As of 2011, the town had a population of 45,494. Demographics According to 2011 census, Coonoor had a population of 45,494 with a sex-ratio of 1,058 females for every 1,000 males, much above the national average of 929. Madras Regiment
The Madras Regiment is the oldest infantry regiment of the Indian Army, originating in the 1750s. The regiment took part in numerous campaigns with both the British Indian Army and the post-independence Indian Army. History The town of Madras was founded in 1639 and the first Fort Saint George in 1644. In August 1758, they were formed into regular companies of 100 men each with a due proportion of Indian officers, havildars, naiks, etc. and in December of that year the first two battalions were formed with a European subaltern to each company and a captain to command the whole. Field Marshal (or field marshal, abbreviated as FM) is a Five-star rank, five–star general officer rank and the highest attainable rank in the Indian Army. Field Marshal is ranked immediately above general, but not exercised in the regular army structure. It is a largely ceremonial or wartime rank, having been awarded only twice. A Field Marshal’s insignia consists of the Emblem of India, national emblem over a crossed baton and sabre in a lotus blossom wreath. Field Marshal Sam Hormusji Framji Jamshedji Manekshaw (3 April 1914 – 27 June 2008), widely known as Sam Manekshaw and Sam Bahadur ("Sam the Brave"), was the Chief of the Army Staff of the Indian Army during the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971, and the first Indian Army officer to be promoted to the rank of field marshal. His active military career spanned four decades and five wars, beginning with service in the British Indian Army in World War II. Manekshaw joined the first intake of the Indian Military Academy, Dehradun, in 1932. He was commissioned into the 4th Battalion, 12th Frontier Force Regiment. In World War II, he was awarded the Military Cross for gallantry. Following the partition of India in 1947, he was reassigned to the 8th Gorkha Rifles. Ooty Bus Stand, also known as Udhagamandalam Central Bus Stand is a bus station located in the town of Ooty. It serves as main bus stand for The Nilgiris district, Tamil Nadu, apart from bus stands in Coonoor, Kotagiri and Gudalur. Location It is located near the Udhagamandalam railway station.
