Black Beauty (1921 Film)
''Black Beauty'' is a 1921 American silent film version of Anna Sewell's 1877 novel of the same name. ''Black Beauty'' is an autobiography of a horse, who tells the story of his life and of the people surrounding it. This film exists in an incomplete state with four of seven reels preserved at the Library of Congress. A competing/rival independent film of the same story was also released in early 1921 starring Claire Adams and Pat O'Malley. It was produced by Eskay Harris Feature Film Company. Plot As summarized in a film publication, a human love story was added to the horse story, which includes a fox hunt and race. At a house party given by Squire Gordon (Steppling), his daughter Jessie (Paige) and Harry Blomefield (Morrison) are playing games with the children, although they have reached the age where Harry realizes that he loves her. David Smith (director)
David Smith (28 October 1872 – 25 April 1930) was an English film director and cinematographer of the silent era. He directed more than 70 films between 1915 and 1927. He was born in Faversham, Kent, and died in Santa Barbara, California. He was the older brother of Albert E. Smith, one of the co-founders of the Vitagraph Studios. Adele Farrington
Adele Farrington (1867 – 19 December 1936) was an American actress of the silent film era. Biography Born Anna King in Brooklyn, New York, Farrington was a stage actress before appearing in 74 films between 1914 and 1926. She was a relatively old actress for the silent film era, being 47 at the beginning of her film career. She appeared in many films directed by Lois Weber and Phillips Smalley. Her husband was film director and actor Hobart Bosworth, in whose films she also often appeared. They divorced and Bosworth remarried to a younger woman and had a small child by 1920. She died in Los Angeles, California. Robert Milasch
Robert Milasch (April 18, 1885 – November 14, 1954) was an American character actor in the Silent film, silent and Sound film, sound periods. He was 6 feet, 6 inches tall. Biography Milasch left his Smoke Mountain, Tennessee, home at age 9, joining a wagon circus that went through the village. At age 13, performing as a contortionist, he joined another circus and went with it to South Africa. He left that troupe after being beaten by his boss and went to England, where he worked as a clown. Back in the United States in 1898, he joined the Gaumont Film Company and began acting in short films for it. Milasch acted on stage before he worked in films. He began his film career in 1903 at 18 at the Edison Manufacturing Company. Margaret Mann (4 April 1868, in Aberdeen, Scotland – 4 February 1941, in Los Angeles, California), was a Scottish-American actress. Biography Margaret Mann starred in a number of major silent films such as ''Black Beauty'' in 1921 and played the lead role in John Ford's 1928 drama ''Four Sons'', one of John Wayne's first films. She often played kind-hearted or suffering motherly roles. With the advent of sound films her roles got notably smaller and she was often uncredited. She portrayed the kindly grandmother Mrs. Mack in two ''Our Gang'' comedies in 1931.
