Eastern Cape
The Eastern Cape is one of the provinces of South Africa. Its capital is Bhisho, but its two largest cities are East London and Gqeberha. The second largest province in the country (at 168,966 km2) after Northern Cape, it was formed in 1994 out of the Xhosa homelands or bantustans of Transkei and Ciskei, together with the eastern portion of the Cape Province. Blaauwkrantz Nature Reserve
The Blaauwkrantz Nature Reserve is a small protected area near Makhanda (Grahamstown) designated for the purpose of conserving the endangered Eastern Province rocky. Nearby are the Waters Meeting Nature Reserve and Buffalo Kloof Protected Environment. The Blaauwkrantz Pass (R67) runs along the length of the reserve, while the Bloukrans River bisects it horizontally. History In 1985, 198.31 ha of land was proclaimed for the conservation of the endangered Eastern Province rocky. Biodiversity The reserve, consisting of veld vegetation, has over 200 plant species including aloe and tree euphorbia. The Blaauwkrantz Pool in the reserve is one of the last refuges of the endemic Eastern Province rocky (rocky kurper). Birds found on the reserve are fish eagle and kingfisher. Otters can also be found in the reserve. Grahamstown
Makhanda, also known as Grahamstown, is a town of about 140,000 people in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa. It is situated about northeast of Port Elizabeth and southwest of East London, Eastern Cape, East London. The R67 is a provincial route in Eastern Cape, South Africa that connects Port Alfred with Komani (previously Queenstown) via Grahamstown. Route The R67 begins in Port Alfred, at a junction with the R72 Road. It begins by going north-north-west for 54 kilometres as the Blaauwkrantz Pass to reach an interchange with the N2 National Route south of the Grahamstown town centre (renamed Makhanda in 2018). The R67 joins the N2 and they are one road eastwards for 9 kilometres before the R67 becomes its own road northwards. From the N2 split east of Makhanda, the R67 goes northwards for 70 kilometres as the Ecca Pass, crossing the Great Fish River and following the Kat River, to reach a junction with the R63 Road in the town of Fort Beaufort. Blaauwkrantz Bridge Disaster
The Blaauwkrantz Bridge disaster occurred on 22 April 1911. A mixed train from Port Alfred travelling to Grahamstown, made up of six goods trucks, three passenger carriages and a guard's van, came to grief when one of the goods trucks derailed on the Blaauwkrantz Bridge over the Blaauwkrantz Pass and, with the three carriages and the guard's van, plunged into the ravine below. Of the 55 passengers, 28 were killed and 22 seriously injured. Some before reaching the bridge a truck left the rails, near the centre of the bridge the truck, which was carrying stone to build the Grahamstown Cathedral The Cathedral of St Michael and St George is the home of the Anglican Diocese of Grahamstown in Makhanda in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa.
