Björlanda Church
The Björlanda Church (Swedish: ''Björlanda kyrka'') is a medieval church in Björlanda, Gothenburg Municipality, western Sweden. It is located on the Hisingen island and belongs to the parish of Torslanda-Björlanda in the Diocese of Gothenburg. History The church was built in the 12th century, and inaugurated, according to the Icelandic skald Eysteinn Ásgrímsson, on a 15 July; the year of the inauguration is not known. The building has been renovated and extended numerous times. Additional windows were installed in the 17th century. In 1734, the medieval choir was torn down. Gothenburg Municipality
Gothenburg Municipality (''Göteborgs kommun'' or ''Göteborgs stad'') is a municipality in Västra Götaland County in western Sweden. Its seat is located in the city of Gothenburg. When the first Swedish local government acts were implemented in 1863 the City of Gothenburg, founded and chartered in 1621, became a city municipality with an elected city council (''stadsfullmäktige''). Its territory has since then been added through amalgamations in 1868, 1906, 1922, 1931, 1945, 1948, 1967 and 1974. Hisingen
Hisingen () is the fifth-largest island of Sweden (after Gotland, Öland, Södertörn and Orust), with an area of . It is a river island, formed by the split of the Göta Älv at Bohus, and is defined to the east and south by the main arm of that river, to the north by the smaller arm (known as the Nordre Älv), and to the west by the Kattegat. Eysteinn Ásgrímsson
Eysteinn Ásgrímsson (c. 1310 – March 14, 1361) was an Icelandic monk, ecclesiastical inspector, and ''skald'' (poet); ', the best known and possibly the best medieval Icelandic Christian poem, is attributed to him. Life Eysteinn Ásgrímsson was at the until 1343, when he was sent to prison for beating up the abbot and possibly also for breaking his vow of chastity. This may have been when he composed ''Lilja'', which is marked by a deep concern with sinfulness. After his release he was sent to the monastery at Helgafell and then became an official at the see of Skálholt. He went to Norway in 1355 with the bishop and returned in 1357 as an inspector of the Skálholt see; the bishop was so angry at this appointment that he excommunicated him. After returning to Norway in 1360, Eysteinn died the following March at the Helgisetr monastery in Niðarós (Trondheim). Choir (architecture)
A choir, also sometimes called quire, is the area of a church or cathedral that provides seating for the clergy and church choir. It is in the western part of the chancel, between the nave and the sanctuary, which houses the altar and Church tabernacle. In larger medieval churches it contained choir-stalls, seating aligned with the side of the church, so at right-angles to the seating for the congregation in the nave. Smaller medieval churches may not have a choir in the architectural sense at all, and they are often lacking in churches built by all denominations after the Protestant Reformation, though the Gothic Revival revived them as a distinct feature.
