Bitlis District (also: ''Merkez'', meaning "central") is a district of Bitlis Province of Turkey. Its seat is the city Bitlis.Ä°l Belediyesi

Bitlis
Bitlis ( hy, Ô²Õ¡Õ²Õ¥Õ· '; ku, Bidlîs; ota, بتليس) is a city in southeastern Turkey and the capital of Bitlis Province. The city is located at an elevation of 1,545 metres, 15 km from Lake Van, in the steep-sided valley of the Bitlis River, a tributary of the Tigris. The local economy is mainly based on agricultural products which include fruits, grain and tobacco. Industry is fairly limited, and deals mainly with leatherworking, manufacture of tobacco products as well as weaving and dyeing of coarse cloth. Bitlis is connected to other urban centres by road, including Tatvan on Lake Van, 25 km to the northeast, and the cities of MuÅŸ (Mush), 100 km northwest, and Diyarbakır, 200 km to the west. The climate of Bitlis can be harsh, with long winters and heavy snowfalls. Summers are hot, and often humid. Since the local elections of March 2019, the Mayor of Bitlis is Nesrullah TanÄŸlay. Değirmenaltı () is a village in Bitlis District in Bitlis Province, Turkey. Its population is 1,137 (2021). The village still contains the ruins of the church of St Anania as well as many khatchkars; carved memorial stones. The village is populated by Kurds. Armenian monument remains The village is notable for the good condition of its many khatchkar stones, which have been remarked on by the Telegraph, and appeared in the documentary 100 Years Later. They have been described as "the most important collection of Armenian khatchkars now surviving in Turkey." The khatchkars stand next to the former church of St. Anania, which dates from the 6th or 7th century and is used by the current population of the village as a barn. Half a mile east of the village are the remains of the monastery of Sourp Hovannes (St. John).
