Bistagno
Bistagno is a ''comune'' (municipality) in the Province of Alessandria in the Italian region Piedmont, located about southeast of Turin and about southwest of Alessandria. Bistagno borders the following municipalities: Castelletto d'Erro, Melazzo, Monastero Bormida, Montabone, Ponti, Rocchetta Palafea, Sessame, and Terzo. In the center of the village is the Giulio Monteverde Gipsothèque, which houses the sculptor's original plaster models. Although the most common and widespread etymology for the toponym is connected with the confluence of two 'branches' of the ''Bormida'' river (the ''Spigno Bormida'' and the ''Millesimo Bormida'') in the territory of ''Bistagno'' (''Bistagno'' Latin ''amnis'', in the meaning of 'river', 'water course', 'stream', 'torrent'), a new etymology, based on linguistic evidence, connects ''Bistagno'' with ''*bĭst-ăgnŏ-s'' (Proto-Indo-European ~ Celtic), which would mean 'small pheasant', and would allude to the presence of this specific bird i ... Giuseppe Saracco
Giuseppe Saracco (6 October 1821 – 19 January 1907) was an Italian politician, financier, and Knight of the Annunziata. Background and earlier career Saracco was born at Bistagno, the province of Alessandria. After qualifying as an advocate, he entered the Piedmontese parliament in 1849. He was a supporter of Cavour. After Cavour died in 1861, Saracco joined the party of Rattazzi and became under-secretary of state for public works in the Rattazzi cabinet of 1862. In 1864 Sella appointed Saracco as secretary-general of finance, and after being created senator in 1865, he acquired considerable fame as a financial authority. In 1879, Saracco succeeded in postponing the total abolition of the grist tax, and was throughout a fierce opponent of Magliani's loose financial administration. Giulio Monteverde
Giulio Monteverde (8 October 1837 – 3 October 1917) was an Italian naturalist sculptor and teacher. Biography Monteverde was born in Bistagno, Italy and studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome.
