Anna Sutherland Bissell
Anna Sutherland Bissell (1846–1934) was a Canadian-American businesswoman who was the first woman CEO in the United States as the executive board member of the Bissell Corporation, known for its carpet sweepers and vacuum cleaners. Early life On December 2, 1846, Bissell was born in River John, Nova Scotia. Bissell's father was William Sutherland (1811-1907), a sea captain. Bissell's mother was Eleanor (nee Putnam) Sutherland (1817-1853). At an early age, her family moved to De Pere, Wisconsin, where they settled. Career By age 16, Bissell was a school teacher. After Bissell married Melville R. Bissell at 19, they became a joint partner in their crockery and china business. Melville Reuben Bissell (September 25, 1843 – March 15, 1889) was an American entrepreneur who invented the modern carpet sweeper.Baxter, Albert (1891). Carpet Sweeper
A carpet sweeper is a mechanical device for the cleaning of carpets. They were popular before the introduction of the vacuum cleaner and have been largely superseded by them. However, they continue to be used in many home and commercial applications because they are lightweight and quiet, enabling users to quickly clean small messes up from the floor without disturbing patrons, patients, babies and pets, and because they do not require electricity to operate. Operation A carpet sweeper typically consists of a small box. The base of the box has wheels and brushes, connected by a belt or gears or rollers. There is also a container for dirt. Walker, Michigan
Walker is a city in Kent County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 23,537 at the 2010 census. Walker was originally organized as Walker Township in 1837 and later incorporated as a city in 1962. It is part of the Grand Rapids metropolitan area and is bordered by the city of Grand Rapids on the east. History The area was first organized as Walker Township on December 30, 1837, the second to be organized in Kent County. It initially comprised all of the land in the county north of the Grand River.
