Bishop River
The Bishop River is a river in the Pacific Ranges of the Coast Mountains, flowing west from the western edge of the Lillooet Icecap to join the Southgate River east of the Homathko Icefield. Bishop River Provincial Park surrounds the upper course of the river, from the source at the Lillooet Icecap to midway along its course above its confluence with the Southgate. Name origin The Bishop River was named for Richard Preston Bishop, born September 18, 1884 in Starcross, Devon, who was a British Columbia Land Surveyor. He had been an officer in the Royal Navy in 1906-07 and served as a captain in World War I, but returned to British Columbia to resume work as a surveyor. Many mountains in the Pacific Ranges, including Mount Sir Francis Drake and Mount Queen Bess, and the Golden Hinde on Vancouver Island, were named in the 1930s as proposed by him. Devon
Devon ( , historically known as Devonshire , ) is a ceremonial and non-metropolitan county in South West England. Mount Raleigh
Mount Raleigh, elevation , is one of the principal summits of the Pacific Ranges of the Coast Mountains of southern British Columbia in Canada. It is located just southeast of the confluence of the Southgate and Bishop Rivers, northeast of the head of Bute Inlet, and is the highest summit south of the Bishop River's divide with the Lillooet River at Ring Pass, which is at the southeastern edge of the Lillooet Icefield and just north of the Pemberton Icecap. It is also the highest peak south of the pass between the upper basins of Chilko Lake and the Taseko Lakes, just north of which is Monmouth Mountain at (see Tsʼilʔos Provincial Park). Vancouver Island
Vancouver Island is an island in the northeastern Pacific Ocean and part of the Canadian Provinces and territories of Canada, province of British Columbia. The island is in length, in width at its widest point, and in total area, while are of land. The island is the largest by area and the most populous along the west coasts of the Americas. Golden Hinde
''Golden Hind'' was a galleon captained by Francis Drake in his circumnavigation of the world between 1577 and 1580. She was originally known as ''Pelican,'' but Drake renamed her mid-voyage in 1578, in honour of his patron, Sir Christopher Hatton, whose crest was a golden hind (a female red deer). Hatton was one of the principal sponsors of Drake's world voyage. A full-sized, seaworthy reconstruction is in London, on the south bank of the Thames. History Queen Elizabeth I partly sponsored Sir Francis Drake as the leader of an expedition intended to pass around South America through the Strait of Magellan and to explore the coast that lay beyond. The queen's support was advantageous; Drake had official approval to benefit himself and the queen, as well as to cause the maximum damage to the Spaniards. Mount Queen Bess
Mount Queen Bess is one of the principal summits of the Pacific Ranges of the Coast Mountains of southern British Columbia. It stands west of Chilko Lake and to the south of Tatlayoko Lake, and crowns a peak-studded ridge to the north of the Homathko Icefield. The mountain is named for Queen Elizabeth I of England. Relatively nearby is Mount Raleigh, named for Sir Walter Raleigh. Other peaks in the vicinity of Queen Bess bear similar Elizabethan-related names: Pembroke, Silver Swan, Oriana, Armada, Grenville, Burghley, Howard, Walsingham, Cambridge, Cloister, Saint John, Galleon, and Monmouth. Between Queen Bess and Chilko Lake is Mount Good Hope, and northwest across the Homathko is the Waddington Range, site of the highest peak in the Coast Mountains, and the highest entirely within British Columbia, Mount Waddington. Mount Sir Francis Drake
Mount Sir Francis Drake, , is a mountain in the Pacific Ranges of British Columbia, Canada, standing above the south side of Waddington Harbour and the head of Bute Inlet on the Central Coast of British Columbia just south of the mouth of the Homathko River as it empties into that harbour and inlet. Name origin The mountain was named in 1935, after the name was first proposed in 1928, in honour of Sir Francis Drake, the English explorer and privateer who was the first to sail an English ship in the Pacific Ocean and laid claim to Nova Albion, being lands to the north of Spanish California, in 1579, in the name of Elizabeth I. Current theories mostly place Point Reyes, California as being the location of that landing, but theories that he also landed farther northwards remain in circulation. Starcross
Starcross is a village with a 2011 census recorded population of 1,737 situated on the west shore of the Exe Estuary in Teignbridge in the English county of Devon. The village is popular in summer with leisure craft, and is home to one of the United Kingdom's oldest sailing clubs. The A379 road and the London to Penzance railway line both run through the village along the banks of the estuary. Starcross railway station is situated on the railway, and the Starcross to Exmouth Ferry, a small passenger ferry, operates across the estuary to Exmouth. A notable feature of Starcross is the Italianate pumping engine house, the best surviving building from Brunel's unsuccessful Atmospheric Railway. The enterprise is commemorated in the ''Atmospheric Railway'' pub located opposite the present-day railway station.
