Jón Helgason (bishop)
Jón Helgason (21 June 1866 – 19 March 1942) was an Icelandic theologian who served as Bishop of Iceland from 1917 till 1939. Biography Helgason was born in Álftanes, on June 21, 1866, the son of the Reverend Helgi Hálfdanarson, later the rector of the Prestaskólinn (the Icelandic Seminary), and his wife Þórhildur Tómasdóttir. He came from a well-known family, including his grandfather Tómas Sæmundsson, a professor at Breiðabólstaður. Jón studied at the Reykjavik School between 1880 and 1886, then completed his degree and sailed the same summer in Copenhagen, where he completed various university degrees, including in Theology in 1892. He was taught in Reykjavík between 1892 and 1893, worked at a church in Denmark in 1893, completed two further examinations from the school in Höfn in 1894 and then travelled through Germany with a grant from the Danish government. Karl Sigurbjörnsson
Karl Sigurbjörnsson (born 5 February 1947) is an Icelandic prelate who held the position of Bishop of Iceland of the national Evangelical Lutheran Church of Iceland from 1998 to 2012. Biography Karl is the son of Sigurbjörn Einarsson, Bishop of Iceland between 1959 and 1981 and his wife Magnea Thorkelsdóttir. Between 1962 and 1964 he went as an exchange student to Tacoma, Washington, United States. He graduated from Reykjavík High School in 1967 and graduated in theology from the University of Iceland on 27 January 1973. He was ordained a priest on 29 January 1973. Between 1973 and 1975 he served as parish priest of the Landakirkja in Vestmannaeyjar. On 6 December 1974 he was appointed parish priest of Hallgrímskirkja in Reykjavík and was installed on 1 January 1975, a post he retained till 1997. Ólafur Skúlason
Ólafur Skúlason (29 December 1929 - 9 June 2008 ) was an Icelandic prelate who was Bishop of Iceland from 1989 to 1997. Since 1996 he had been accused of sexually abusing many women, including his daughter. Biography Ólafur was born in Birtingaholt in Hrunamannahreppur, Iceland, the son of Skúli Oddleifsson and Sigríður Ágústsdóttir. After graduating from the University of Iceland in 1955, he was ordained priest for service to the Icelandic congregation in Mountain, North Dakota. In 1960, he was appointed as the first youth representative of the National Church and in 1964 became pastor of Bústaðarkirkja in Reykjavik. In 1975 he was appointed a Dean in Reykjavik. In 1983 he was appointed and consecrated Bishop of Skálholt and suffragan to the Bishop of Iceland. In 1989 he was elected Bishop of Iceland. Pétur Sigurgeirsson (2 June 1919 – 4 June 2010) was the Bishop of Iceland from 1981 until 1989. Biography Pétur was the son of Sigurgeir Sigurdsson who later became Bishop of Iceland and Gudrún Pétursdóttir. He had 3 other siblings and was the oldest amongst them. He graduated from Reykjavík University in 1940 and studied theology at the University of Iceland and graduated in 1944. He undertook a master's degree at the Lutheran Theological Seminary at Philadelphia in Philadelphia and studied journalism, English and Biblical Studies at Stanford University, California. In 1947, he was ordained priest and served in the parish of Akureyri. He became the Bishop of Hólar in 1969. Ásmundur Guðmundsson (6 October 1888 - 29 May 1969) was an Icelandic prelate who was Bishop of Iceland from 1954 till 1959. Biography Guðmundsson was born on 6 October 1888 in Reykholt, Iceland. He graduated from the University of Iceland on 19 June 1912. He served as pastor to the Icelandic settlements in Alberta for a month in 1914 and in Saskatchewan in Canada from 1912 till 1914. He became an assistant priest in Stykkishólmur on 24 June 1915 and became parish priest on Helgafell on 31 May 1916. Appointed principal of Eiðar on 11 January 1919 and Associate Professor at the Faculty of Theology at the University of Iceland on 24 April 1928 and Professor on 24 April 1934.
