Bishop Balthazar Ntivuguruzwa
Balthazar Ntivuguruzwa (born September 15, 1967) is a Rwandan prelate, educator and bishop of the Roman Catholic Church. Since June 2023, he has served as the Bishop of Diocese of Kabgayi. Previously, he served as the Vice Chancellor of Institut Catholique de Kabgayi and the dean of studies at Nyakibanda Major Seminary. Early life and education Ntivuguruzwa was born on September 15, 1967, in Kabgayi, Rwanda. He studied at the Saint Leon Minor Seminary of Kabgayi from 1982 to 1988. After the Minor Seminary, he studied philosophy at the seminary in Kabgayi and then studied theology at the Université Catholique du Congo in Kinshassa, DRC. On January 18, 1997, he was ordained Priest of the Diocese of Kabgayi. From 2003, Ntivuguruzwa studied at the Catholic University of Louvain and received his PhD in 2009. Kabgayi
Kabgayi is just south of Gitarama in Muhanga District, Southern Province, Rwanda, southwest of Kigali. It was established as a Catholic Church mission in 1905. It became the center for the Roman Catholic Church in Rwanda and is the site of the oldest cathedral in the country and of Catholic seminaries, schools and a hospital. The church at first supported the Tutsi ruling elite, but later backed the Hutu majority. During the 1994 Rwandan genocide thousands of Tutsis who had taken refuge here were killed. Some survivors admire the courage of many priests who helped them during those difficult days, like Father Evergiste RUKEBESHA and many others. Later, some Hutus including three bishops and many priests were killed by the rebels RPF soldiers. A mass grave beside the hospital is marked by a memorial. St Léon Minor Seminary of Kabgayi is a Catholic church minor seminary located in Kabgayi, Southern province of Rwanda. The school is owned by Kabgayi Diocese of Catholic Church of Rwanda. Established in 1913, the seminary is the oldest formal school in Rwanda. The minor seminary of Kabgayi had educated a number of notable people both in the church and the politics. The Saint Charles Borromeo Major Seminary of Nyakibanda is a Roman Catholic seminary near to Butare, in the Gishamvu sector of the Huye District in Southern Province of Rwanda, below the mountain chain called "Ibisi bya Nyakibanda". It is about from Butare. Overview The Nyakibanda Major Seminary was created in 1936. The seminary is under the jurisdiction of the Conference of Bishops of Rwanda, who in turn are under the Holy See in Rome, which is represented by the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples. As of 2007 there were 186 seminarians taking the four-year course. As of 2011 the rector was father Antoine Kambanda. Kambanda was appointed in February 2006.
