Birtle, Manitoba
Birtle is an unincorporated urban community in the Prairie View Municipality within the Canadian province of Manitoba that held town status prior to 1 January 2015. It is located at the junction of Highways 83 and 42. History Originally incorporated in 1884, the community lies in the Birdtail River valley. It features a spacious community park developed in the early years of the community with additions through the years to bring it to the current time where the original golf course designed to take advantage of the valley contours now enjoys the modern amenities and the tennis courts still located in the original location now feature modern plexipave surfaces and are some of the best in western Manitoba. Another attraction is the Birdtail Country Museum, housed in an historic stone building on Main Street. The building was built in the early 1900s to be used as the Union Bank. Birtle Indian Residential School
The Birtle Indian Residential School was a school within the Canadian Indian residential school system that operated in Birtle, Manitoba from 1888 to 1970. Operated by the Presbyterian Church in Canada, attendance during the school's operation ranged from 19 to 170 students. School conditions An analysis of the school's water in 1941 indicated high levels of colon bacilli, an indication of fecal contamination, leading to the discovery that the school's chlorination system had stopped working. In 1950 an equipment leak led to the shut down of the school's hot-water supply resulting in students having to carry buckets of boiling water from the basement's boiler to bathtubs in order to bathe. Water quality was again identified as an issue at the school as part of a federal report that rated the quality of the water from the kitchen tap as "dangerous". Rossburn is an unincorporated urban community in the Rossburn Municipality, Manitoba. Prior to 1 January 2015, Rossburn was designated as a town. It is near Waywayseecappo First Nation. There is an elementary school and a collegiate school. Rossburn is also home to Brandon Wheat Kings player Chad Nychuk who was deemed the name “The Rossburn Rifle” after scoring multiple game winning goals as a 20 year old. Foxwarren is a community in the Prairie View Municipality in the Canadian province of Manitoba. It is located along the concurrence of Provincial Trunk Highways 16 and 83. The community was first noted on a map in 1888 as Fox Warren. The Post Office opened in 1889. The Canadian Pacific Railway established a railpoint and a school district were formed with the same name. An Environment Canada Radar station is located in Foxwarren. Binscarth is an unincorporated urban community in the Municipality of Russell – Binscarth, Manitoba. It is located approximately northwest of Brandon, south from Russell, and east of the Saskatchewan border. Prior to 1 January 2015, it was designated as a village. The economic base of Binscarth and area is a mix of agriculture and service businesses. Major industrial employers in the area include three potash mines nearby in Saskatchewan (Nutrien in Rocanville, and Mosaic K1 in Esterhazy and K2 in Gerald) and a canola crushing plant ( Bunge) at Harrowby Manitoba. Russell is an unincorporated urban community in the Municipality of Russell – Binscarth, Manitoba. It is located along PTH 16 and PTH 83, and is at the western terminus of PTH 45. Russell is approximately east of the Saskatchewan border and northwest of Winnipeg. The community is home to 1,611 people as of the 2011 census. The community was designated as a town prior to 1 January 2015, when it and the nearby Village of Binscarth amalgamated with the Rural Municipality of Russell. Russell is the home of Manitoba's Beef and Barley Festival, which is held annually in October to celebrate the region's strong agricultural tradition. Ron Low
Ronald Albert Low (born June 21, 1950) is a Canadian former ice hockey goaltender and coach. He played in the National Hockey League with six teams between 1972 and 1985. After retiring he became a coach and was head coach of Edmonton Oilers from 1995 to 1999 and the New York Rangers from 2000 to 2002. Low grew up in Foxwarren, Manitoba. Playing career Low played for two years with the Dauphin Kings of the Manitoba Junior Hockey League (MJHL) before turning pro, leading the Kings to the Manitoba championship and the Memorial Cup playoffs each year. Originally selected in the 1970 NHL Amateur Draft by the Toronto Maple Leafs, Low only played one season with Toronto before he was left exposed in the 1974 NHL Expansion Draft where he was claimed by the Washington Capitals. Bill Derlago
William Anthony Derlago (born August 25, 1958) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey player. He played in the National Hockey League from 1978 to 1987 with the Vancouver Canucks, Toronto Maple Leafs, Boston Bruins, Winnipeg Jets and Quebec Nordiques. Derlago was born in Birtle, Manitoba, but grew up in Beulah, Manitoba. Career Growing up, Derlago excelled at multiple sports, including golf, tennis, baseball, and hockey. He achieved best success with ice hockey, playing with the Brandon Wheat Kings and setting a number of WCJHL records. He was selected fourth overall by the Vancouver Canucks in the 1978 NHL Entry Draft. As a rookie with the Canucks in 1978–79, Derlago badly injured his knee and was limited to just nine games, though he did score eight points. Rick Berry
Richard E. Berry (born November 4, 1978) is a Canadian former ice hockey defenceman who played in the NHL with the Colorado Avalanche, Pittsburgh Penguins and the Washington Capitals. Berry now lives in Colorado and is a financial consultant. Playing career Berry was drafted 55th overall in the 1997 NHL Entry Draft by the Colorado Avalanche. He played the majority of his first three pro seasons in the American Hockey League with the Hershey Bears. In his first full season with Colorado, he played 57 games before he was traded to the Pittsburgh Penguins on March 19, 2002 with Ville Nieminen for Darius Kasparaitis. He did not last long in Pittsburgh, as he was claimed by the Washington Capitals in the 2002 NHL Waiver Draft later that year.
