Charlie Birt
Charles T. Birt (born May 27, 1942 in Winnipeg, Manitoba) is a politician in Manitoba, Canada. He was a member of the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba from 1984 to 1988, representing the riding of Fort Garry for the Progressive Conservative Party. Birt grew up in East Kildonan, was educated at Miles Macdonell Collegiate and at the University of Manitoba, and worked as a lawyer before entering political life. From 1980 to 1984, he was a member of the Winnipeg City Council. He also was a member of the Children's Aid Board of Winnipeg from 1980 to 1983, and served as a trustee for Victoria Hospital from 1980 to 1984. He was first elected to the Manitoba legislature in a by-election held on October 2, 1984, following the resignation of Bud Sherman in Fort Garry. Fred Birt
Fred Birt (10 November 1886 – 5 July 1956) was a Welsh international, rugby union centre who played club rugby for Newport and county rugby with Monmouthshire. He won seven caps for Wales but is most notable for his outstanding performance against the 1912 touring South African team for Newport. He was also a member of the Wales bowls team. Rugby career Birt had an early connection with the game of rugby, and as a youth was a ball boy for Welsh rugby legend, Arthur Gould at Newport. He joined the club as a senior and was a member of the First XV in the 1906/07 season. In 1912 Birt was part of the Newport team that faced the touring South African side. Jillian Margaret Birt is an Australian rock musician and architect. Birt was the keyboardist and vocalist of the alternative rock and pop band, The Triffids from 1983 to 1989. In 2008, The Triffids were inducted into the Australian Recording Industry Association Hall of Fame. Biography Early years Jillian Margaret Birt was born in Tambellup, a rural agricultural region of Western Australia 317 km south east of Perth. Her parents were grain and sheep farmers. John Birt (footballer)
John Birt (born 29 January 1937) is a former Australian rules footballer who played with Essendon in the VFL and West Torrens in the South Australian National Football League (SANFL). Birt was a rover and, after being recruited to Essendon from Ballarat, he made his VFL debut in 1957. The following year he had one of his finest seasons, finishing 6th in the Brownlow Medal and topping Essendon's goalkicking list with 31 goals. He was a premiership player in 1962 and 1965, as well as playing in two losing Grand Finals, and won the W. S. Crichton Medal for his club's Best and Fairest in 1961, 1965 and 1967. Birt was playing coach for West Torrens in the SANFL from 1968 to 1970. John Edward Birt (11 December 1873 – 21 June 1925) was an Australian politician. He was born at Woolloomooloo in Sydney to seaman John and Margaret (née McDonough) Birt, and educated by the Marist Brothers in Darlinghurst before working in a grocery and then in retail stores. From 1904 he worked as a commercial traveller and later as a public service clerk, becoming involved with the Public Service Association. He was president of the Paddington Labour League, founded the Darlinghurst branch, and was a member of the executive from 1908 to 1910. In 1919 he was elected to the New South Wales Legislative Assembly as the Labor member for Paddington. John Birt, Baron Birt (born 10 December 1944) is a British television executive and businessman. He is a former Director-General (1992–2000) of the BBC. After a successful career in commercial television, initially at Granada Television and later at London Weekend Television, Birt was appointed Deputy Director-General of the BBC in 1987 for his expertise in current affairs. The forced departure of Director-General Alasdair Milne after pressure from the Thatcher government required someone near the top, preferably from outside the BBC, with editorial and production experience (Milne had been summarily replaced by Michael Checkland, an accountant). During his tenure as Director-General, Birt restructured the BBC, in the face of much internal opposition. Sir Michael Cameron St John Birt, KC (born 25 August 1948) was the 88th Bailiff of Jersey in the Channel Islands. Birt was educated in Jersey at St. Michael's Preparatory School then at Marlborough College. He went on to read law at Magdalene College, Cambridge. He was called to the English Bar in 1970 and practised as a barrister at 2 Crown Office Row for five years. He returned to Jersey and qualified at the Jersey Bar in 1977. He was sworn in as an advocate of the Royal Court on 3 October 1977. From 1976 to 1993 he was in private practice with the Jersey law firm Ogier & Le Cornu. In January 1994 he was appointed as HM Attorney General for Jersey. In February 2000, he became Deputy Bailiff. In July 2009, he was appointed Bailiff, in succession to Sir Philip Bailhache. Lindsay Michael Birt, AO, CBE (18 January 193228 October 2001) was the inaugural vice-chancellor of the University of Wollongong between 1975 and 1980, and the fourth vice-chancellor of the University of New South Wales between 1981 and 1992. Biography Michael Birt was born on 18 January 1932 in Melbourne, Australia. He was educated at Melbourne Boys High School and the University of Melbourne, where he completed a Bachelor of Agricultural Science, a Bachelor of Science and a PhD in biochemistry. In 1960, Birt returned to the University of Melbourne taking up the position of lecturer and then senior lecturer in the Department of Biochemistry. Peter Birt ( – June 1791) was a businessman from Airmyn, Yorkshire, England, who made his fortune from the Aire and Calder Navigation and used part of his wealth to build the mansion named Wenvoe Castle. He became High Sheriff of Glamorgan. Businessman Peter Birt was born around 1723 in Yorkshire. One source says his family was well-off yeomen from Berkshire, but others said he had been "bred a tailor". He became a merchant in the trade with Russia. Birt became involved with Sir Henry Ibbetson in a coal-mining venture. In 1758 Birt and Ibbetson acquired a 14-year lease on the tolls of the Aire and Calder Navigation for £6,000. Suzanne Birt (born Suzanne Gaudet on October 2, 1981 in Summerside, Prince Edward Island) is a Canadian curler from Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island. She currently skips her own team on the World Curling Tour. Career Juniors Birt, a skip, is a two-time Canadian Junior Champion (2001, 2002) and a former World Junior Curling Champion (2001). She also won a silver medal at the 1995 Canada Games. Birt had attended the 1998, 1999, and 2000 Canadian Juniors before finally winning it. Travis Rodney Birt (born 9 December 1981) is an Australian former cricketer. A left-handed batsman, Birt represented the Australian national under-19 team before making his debut for Tasmania during the 2003–04 season. Strong form at state level led to his selection for Australia A during the 2006 off-season, as well as a two-year stint with Derbyshire in English county cricket. Birt transferred to Western Australia for the 2011–12 season, but has found more success in the Twenty20 format, variously representing the Wellington Firebirds, Delhi Daredevils, Nagenahira Nagas, and Khulna Royal Bengals in New Zealand, Indian, Sri Lankan, and Bangladeshi domestic tournaments, respectively.
